Satoh 650G broken pto

I have a 1978 satoh 650G that have owned for 35 years. Great little tractor but have been hearing and feeling loud clunk coming from the transmission for the last few years when roto tilling. It has a 2 speed pto but I always use the slower speed. Last week while tilling in dry ground it finally decided to quit altogether. I know I should have checked it out years ago but in my 80’s now getting even more lazy. Any one have any similar problem and do I have to split the tractor to gain access. The tranny itself still works fine and tractor is still useable just no pto in either speed

More speculation on my part but I don't see how the internals which drive the PTO shift can be accessed without splitting the tractor. I hope I am wrong but if the engine and other tractor parts are still good, it may be worth the effort.
