Waiting for a new timing belt for my i1042 to arrive and in the process of preparing noticed that the new spindle and the old one are different. I rechecked - they are the same part number, but the teeth on the old spindle are different from the new one. Would this make the difference that the timing belt is slipping and causing a blade collision within a few revolutions? (the other spindle that I did not replace has the same configuration of teeth as the spindle I did replace)

Photos attached are of the new and replaced spindle.

My question is - would the difference in teeth configuration really make the difference in the blades getting out of sync? (If so I'll have to purchase another spindle as I'm unable to get the wheel off the old one (no vice)).

thanks!

are you sure the old one (in your hand in the photos) isn't just worn? if the other pulleys in the system look like that, I'd say they need replaced also.

I don't believe so, but will double check... and sure.. that would absolutely explain the issue but the belt seemed fairly tight on the spindles (even when I had the two old ones)....

The teeth on the old spindle are badly worn, and could cause timing issues and possible jumping of the teeth on the spindle.

It looks like the belt has worn a groove in the teeth on the old pulley. If the outside diameter of the new pulley is the same as the old one and a new belt will mesh completely into the teeth on the new pulley it should be correct.

Have to agree - the 'old' pulley is severely worn. With the old pulley's teeth so worn, the diameter of the pulley has been reduced which is why the blades are not in sync any more with the one with the new pulley, which is a greater diameter. Not to mention that the 'teeth' on the old pulley are so worn that they will allow a lot of 'slop' and slippage. order up and change all the pulleys for this belt or you will be replacing the belt again in very short order. Not to mention the blades as they start to hit each other.

Yup... close inspection says the pulley is worn and I'm ordering a new one. Thanks so much for your help guys, I'm hopeful this will be "it".
