Same air filter for JD 790 & Kubota L4300

Not sure if anyone knows or cares or maybe I'm the last to know but I discovered the inner and out air filters for my JD790 and Kubota L4300 are exactly the same. When I put new JD 790 filters on the shelf next to my Kubota L4300 filters, I was surprised. Deere had it's logo on it but they were otherwise exactly the same and even looked to be made by the same maker. See photos. Both the inner and outer are exactly the same. Now, there is a serial number break for 790's so not sure about them all.

Here are my part numbers.

Kubota L4300----outer filter #TA040-93230 ---- Inner TA040-93220

JD 790--- outer---- M131802 inner------ M131803

Seems logical when you think about it and I wonder how many other situations are similar but I'll bet the prices are different. A check of filter fit would be to find a filter site like Fram, find your filter required and back search a cross reference of that filter

I did just this very thing. My filter was $39 a pop and I cross referenced it to Napa, $30, Auto Zone (Fram) $30, then finally Advanced Auto (Purolator) $4.99.

Yes, $4.99. When I got it home and compared it it matched the other filters I had purchased exactly and its built very well. I then went back and got 8 filters total, all that would fit on my shelf. I figure at that price it was well worth it.

By the way the part for my tractor, Purolator Part #A42019 sells for about $25 to $30 everywhere else under the sun other than Advanced Auto who still sells them for $4.99

The filter is also the same part for many other ag machines like Case equipment, ect.


By the way, your filter looks just like the filter on our Ferris ZTR with a 37HP Kawasaki gas engine. It uses inner and outer filters. My guess is the OEM's are buying air filter boxes from companies like Donaldson, ect.

I have done the same thing with oil filters, ect.

I'm pretty sure there are two different styles of air filters for the JD790 though. It originally had the 30hp engine, then JD later changed it to a 27hp engine, I think that had something to do with it.

Probably has more to do with the fact that air filters and air filter housings are seldom, if ever, built by tractor manufacturers (and never have been). And the more filters and housings of a particular spec Donaldson or whomever builds, the cheaper they get. There are only so many design parameters for an air filter package to fit an engine of X displacement running at X RPM.

There used to be "reverse cross reference" tables by the filter makers that showed what applications the filter number fit. For example, a Fram #123456 would fit the list these particular tractors. I mention Fram only because they had the best and cross reference info. Wix was good as well.
I lost track when I stopped getting the master fit books they put out every year. Anyone know if this data is still out there?

Wix makes NAPA's filters. In many cases Wix just adds a digit to the front of NAPA's part #.

I did the cross reference thing a while back when I was looking to get a new hydro filter for my JD955. I came up with a Fram number and a Wix number. Turns out that in my area for that filter, JD's price was better than any of the local auto parts chains.

I think this is very true about John Deere and the price of filters. Usually they are the best price around, unless it's a one-off they can hold you hostage over. Gets you in the store.
