My older Satoh tractor with oil bath air cleaner does not charge. The warning light that indicates it isnt charging has been on since I purchased the tractor. I am hoping to correct the problem. I have read on these threads that the alternator from an early 70's ford courier can be adapted to work. I am unsure if the alternator or the voltage regulator is the problem. Could someone please tell me what to check and point me in the right direction to get started in diagnosing the problem. Thanks.

Here is some info from another forum that may be helpful:

While you were changing your alternator you could also change the mechanical
regulator with a solid state regulator. Voltage Regulator = # 265072 at Advance
Auto, GP Sorensen 26-5072 exact replacement, electronic. Same as 1972 Ford
Courier PU truck. It is a direct replacement, at least on my S650G.

what you have to do is this.get a multimeter and do the following:
1. set the multimeter to read dc volts on a scale that is greater than 12 volts.
2.touch the positive lead of the multimeter to the positive battery post.
3. touch the negative meter lead to the battery negative post or any metal part of the tractor.
4. you should get a reading on the multi meter of about 12-14 volts for a good battery.
5.make a note of the reading you get on the meter.now start the engine and take the reading on the multimeter.if the alternator is charging you will have a slightly higher reading now.
6.stop the engine.leave the meter negative lead connected.turn the ignition switch on .put the meter positive lead on the alternator wire.the heavy post.you should read battery voltage.now unplug the alternator plug or field wires.and test for voltage.one wire will have battery voltage.if none of the wire has battery voltage the regulator is defective.replace reglator and retest.if you find voltage on one wire then the alrernator is defective. send out to rebuild or replace.

Thanks for both responses. I went out to the barn this morning and followed the above listed procedure. The battery voltalge was 13.2. I have battery voltage at positive lug on alternator with key on. I also have battery voltage on one of the wires from field connector when unplugged and key on. If I understand the above listed test procedure, it looks like I need a new alternator. Should I check into having this one rebuilt or would it just be cheaper to buy the alternator for the ford courier that I have heard will work??? Any responses greatly appreciated.

This may help, also from another board:

Thanks to your help I have replaced the alternator on my Bison (s650g bison)
with NAPA part number 2138830. It was a near perfect fit and the electrical was
identical. The cost was $36.00 with the core exchange ($2.50). I removed the
old and installed the new. No alterations needed.

A & T Parts & Rebuilders these guys do rebuilding if you want to have it rebuilt.however the replacement may be a lot cheaper and a more amps output.

Just received my NAPA alternator part #213-8830, which is remanufactured. The total cost was $44.99 for the alternator, $2.50 core deposit, and $8.00 shipping from parts house in Georgia to Ohio. The alternator was easy to put on with the only snag being, that I had to loosen bottom radiator bolt to slide radiator forward to remove bottom alternator bolt. Alternator seems to be an exact fit and charges perfectly. A big thank you to Oliver 28472 and Mit for the helpful advice. Great site for technical info.

Wish I could take credit but I was just passing along good information gleaned from this board and others. Glad it worked!!
