I have a 1/2 mile driveway that has a good base and 4"-5" of asphalt millings. When it was installed, it was graded and compacted with a road roller. When new it was awesome. I've tried to maintain it with an occasional bucket scrape and a drag mat. It's getting badly rutted and I tried to weigh the drag mat down to dig deeper and the driveway just ate up the mat. I'm thinking about getting a land leveler that would attach to a skid loader but before I pull the trigger I wanted to get some advice. Has anyone dealt with a rutted/washboarded asphalt milling driveway with these maintenance issues? What attachments have you used with success?

No experience but anything you would do would loosen up all of you compaction. The surface would then be all loose millings and would only remain smooth temporally.
The options I see it to loosen the surface and re-roll. Or add a top layer of millings and re-roll.

THAT is exactly what I predicted. No way to rework it. It's halfway ashalt and might require the same tools and equipment. MAYBE, a new style Harley rake with the NIBS as opposed to the ribs on the roller like my old style rake has. I don't think my old style Harley rake would do a darn thing for that stuff.

I use a box blade on mine and surprisingly enough it lasts quite a while before it has to be worked again. Mine sounds exactly like yours. I have a really good crown on mine and my 7 foot box is the perfect width to scrape half at the time. I can tell you the sealer doesn't work once it gets to that point. When I get tired of scraping I have a new layer laid down.

Rework and compact it like regular gravel driveway

When I had millinggs, I'd use my Yanmar PTO rototiller to loosen it up running in reverse, then use my 8' York rake to smooth and crown it. Only problem is that now you have a superhighway, so teens, delivery drivers and neighbors coming over run at high speed. Couple of well place 2x4 in then solved THAT problem.

Had a similar issue but it was rutting as opposed to washbaording.
We used a pulverizer on it and that worked great. Every few years we added a maintenance layer to it as well.

I was afraid of that. The darn thing is only a year old....

I'm looking into the newer style harley rake...looks like it leaves a nice finish, but I'm guessing that it will need compaction after that?

Do you compact yours after you box blade it? Or just drive on it? I'm thinking that if I don't compact it, it'll just get pushed to the sides.
