Ive placed this thread under projects, because to me the last step in any project is a good coat of Rustoleum.
Well today I went first to my local Wal -Mart to get a gallon of OIL based Gloss Black paint. This reticular store was out of the Black, and had only some white. So I asked the clerk if they would be getting and in, and he said no, they weren't going to be "stocking it anymore'.
I left, and went the next closest Wal Mart store to buy the same thing. This store had NONE, not even quarts. The Paint Dept Manager, told me that they no longer carry it. And the reason was that it was bad for the environment and that they weren't going to be producing it anymore.
Also a hazard to sore in the store. (HMM almost next to hundreds of quarts of motor oil and other things)
I left, and went to Lowe's who had a full stock of it. Grabbed a gallon, and it only took me three tries and some help to get the only self serve machine to work.
Apparently Lowe's makes you type in the last four numbers of the card.
(possibly for security).
I sure hope rustoleum isn't going by the side, I used it to paint equipment, as well as cars.
I myself wonder if it was thatRustoleum didn't cave to the price setting that Wal Mart does to the suppliers. If that is the case. I would applaud them. But I dint think we will ever really know why Wal Mart isn't going to carry it.
I look forward to any info anyone might have with respect to this.

Why is it every time someone can't find something at a store they question if the company is going out of business? There is absolutely no logic behind this.

In all probability, Walmart (or whomever) got a better wholesale price from the paint supplier they're now distributing and that's why Walmart is selling it. The clerk is wrong...is not an expert...and probably only learned about paint last week when s/he started stocking the shelves in the paint section.

Rustoleum has a complete line of water based products to meet California VOC requirements. If you don't believe me - take a look at a real industrial supplier like Grainger's instead of the local cheap shop, big box supplier.

By the way...do you know you can still purchase lead paint? I have lead primer in my paint cabinet right now. It's still used for certain marine applications (bilges for example).

I use Rustoleum Protective Enamel for all my tractor projects including forks, landscape rakes, dethatcher, carryalls, etc. With a good primer on a clean base, the RPE will take a beating and come back for more.

BTW, they are not going out of business. Wal-Mart just made them a counter offer on pricing that they could not accept. Lowe's and probably Home Depot and your local hardware store still carry it.

I've had good luck with Ace Hardware enamels and primers. Use it on my implements and on my antique tractors, holds up great. They carry the factory colors JD green, IH red, Ford blue, etc.

Rust-Oleum Brands - Stopping Rust is Just the Start
Bedlam,
That Walmart documentary was very informative. Walmart is having a lot of difficulty in other countries because the companies that Walmart tries to force low prices on are baulking. Walmart has actually left Germany because of this and is now focusing on England. They are having marginal success in England but will probably succeed there. The documentary focused in part on Rubber-maid and the products it produced. When Rubber-maid couldn't lower its prices to Walmart's demands with out going bankrupt Walmart dropped them and refused to carry any Rubber-maid products.. Rubber-maid went under. The name is still out there but it is no longer owned by the original folks and Wal-mart is now stocking some of the brand.
Maybe Walmart tried the same thing with Rust-Oleum and they wouldn't budge. Rust-Oleum does not need Wally World like Rubber-maid did.

And thats why I no longer set foot on Commiemart's parking lot's.

As for Rustoleum, as far as I know their still going strong. I can find them at all the local little hardware stores and industrial supply stores.

Wouldn't you know it, I own stock in both RPM (Rustoleum) and Newell Rubbermaid. Newell specialized in buying companys, and streamlining them. They were doing quite well until the Merger/Purchase of rubbermaid. I think there is also more competition with the throwaway containers (Glad).

Back to Rustoleum. When the economy is down or slow, products such as these pick up because company's spend money on maintanence vs purchasing. My ACE is the place has a great selection of their paints. Rust Oleum is a well known name brand, and is money for RPM. You won't see the name go away, maybe formula changes.

There are two reasons Walmart isn't going to carry Rustoleum.
One was already mentioned by MadReferee that Walmart offered at price the company wouldn't accept.
The other reason they drop products from their store is they don't move it fast enough. If it sits on the shelf they don't make money.
