Tractor
Looking to buy one
Anyone know how so much rust could be on the 3pt arms on some of the tractors on the market? I was looking at a tc 40da 2005 model, the top link the rust is under the paint and the paint is flaking off. It is along the east coast could this be cause of the salt water in the air? Cheap metal? could it have been sitting in a hurricane or under water?

A rusty top link is small potatoes. What's the rest of the tractor itself look like? Back East, they use a lot of salt on the roads and streets and some places groom beaches with tractors so it's possible to see salt corrosion on the three point parts and the wheels.

If the East Coast is anything like the West Coast...Plastic and Stainless Rust!!

Paint slows it down at best.

Rust is a never ending Battle here:mad:

I must say I have never seen plastic rust:D And good quality stainless like food grade doesn't rust either.

But I agree, a TL is nothing to worry about. The tractor is 6 years old. TL's are just made out of mild steel, which will rust, so quality of steel has little to do with it. Quality of paint?? Maybe. But probabally a poor prep job. A new TL is only $30 at TSC. Thats pennies compaired to a $15k plus tractor. And it could be that someone used a pipewrench or something on it too. I know I have on mine before from time to time. Those little t-handles dont provide much leverage.

Cheap Paint. Very thin. Also the TL could be from an older tractor.

I'm seeing many 5-8 year old tractors with rusty wheels, rusty undercarriages etc. My '06 TC45A sits in a dry, climate controlled garage and it has rust forming here and there on the 3 pt arms and undercarriage in various places. That should not be.

My neighbor has a early 60's Oliver and it has the original paint in it and while it was always stored inside, the tractor has very little rust on it-mostly from dents or wear areas from normal use.

Paint was made much better back then-thicker and better pigments.

Manufacturers today cut cost everywhere and don;t build these tractors to last 30-40 years or longer.

Pre EPA mandates on lead and other ingredients. Remember peeling clearcoat???

When I repainted my trailer about 15 years ago I found a quart of the old Rustoleum red primer that I had from I believe 35 years ago stored away in the back of a closet on the farm. It was still good. That is the only area of the trailer that has not shown any rust over the years. It mentioned on the label "fish oil" and lead.

Thanks for the replies, I Have to agree with the points you people made, I've used a pipe wrench on the TL as well on a late 70's white, but the paint never flaked off it just wore in. A unit that new surprised me of the rust. The bucket is almost completely covered in rust not any paint on it that i can see. I dont ever remember that on the farm, but i this tractor and loader were not used and were sitting outside alot. The only other complaints were the toggle switch on the side council was missing they replaced it, and the fuel gauge wasnt reading correct and the tapped on the dash and it started to work again so they took some shields off and checked the connections and it works now both issues. Some section of paint was rubbed off one of the tilt cylinders but other that that it seems top notch. They put a drawbar on it from a TC 35, and added winter additives cause it -5 F and its only getting colder for a while.

The old paint on my 1985 B7100HST-E Kubota is holding up pretty good. A little fading with just a few surface rust places here and there. She ain"t pretty, but she is mine. I hear a new country western song here. LOL zman :D

Well i didnt realize they were that cheap, I was looking for visual signs of abuse neglect. This seems like a common problem with other tractors as well. I bought the tractor friday and it should be here monday and I am fricken as excited as all **** to get it! But I have to go back to work on Tuesday so that kind of sucks.
