Hi there,

Can any Texans offer comments on living in the Houston area? Are there decent sized acreages (10+ acres) anywhere near a 30-40 minute commute to downtown Houston? Or is that completely unreasonable? Any recommended "suburbs"?

Comments appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

New house & tractor. Now it's time to leave for warmer climes??
Surely this winter hasn't been that bad!

Conroe, Cleveland, Dayton/ Liberty, Manvil, Alvin, there is lots of places with that much acreage. Some might be a little more than a 40 minute commute on some days. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif www.har.com - Houston Area Realtors website. The most important thing to check out is whether or not the property is on a flood plain.

When opportunity comes knocking it means your doing something right and calling her in.

Something else to keep in mind ... Houston is a BIG place . If you work on the north side you darn sure don't want to live south etc. So you can start limiting your search area that way. work west, live west ... work south, live south. Trying to do it any other way will make your commute 2 hours long vs. 45 minutes - 1 hr. I live in Angleton 40 miles south .. and work in Dickinson (part of Houston metro area) which is mostly south of Houston proper - SE actually. commute = 45 min. My wife works on the west side - her commute = 1hr + . Also - Houston = Harris county - you want a surrounding county .. But .. it's a strange place - there are still pastures with cattle in the middle of town - doesn't seem unusual to me - but I've had visitors that couldn't get over it.

Mike,

So out of curiosity, how long of a commute would you speculate from places like Conroe or Magnolia to down town Houston? Is that more like 1hr+??

By the way, great real-estate web site Brad!

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello, Kevin. I don't want to discourage you, but the commute can be intolerable. I used to drive from a suburb north of Houston (Cypress) to the west side. It was 21 miles one way. The drive took 1 1/2 hours many times. As others have mentioned, work and live on the same side of town and it won't be too bad.

Oh, by the way, we don't have Super Bowls here all the time. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jazzdad,

Thanks for the input. Everyone keeps saying "live on the side of town you work". I believe the work location is literally downtown (oil central /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) so does it really matter which "side" you're on?
