I'm thinking about adding a Ruger Blackhawk to my collection.
I've never owned a single action revolver (although I shoot my DA revolvers single action most the time).
There are two convertible models available: .357/9mm and .45 Colt/.45ACP. I'm leaning toward the .45 Colt/.45ACP (more then leaning, actually).

Any TBNer's have experiences or recommendations they'd like to share concerning the Ruger Blackhawks?

I would go super Blackhawk 44 mag 7.5 inch barrel

We have this gun also and it is a lot of fun to shoot. But if I was to buy another Blackhawk I would look at the .45 conversion since we have two .45acp semi autos and plenty of ammo as well as reloading equipment in that caliber.

I never had any interest in a .44 Magnum...just don't care for them. I have shot a couple over the years...always prefered .357 Magnum.
Also, I'm most interested in the shorter barrelled guns (4 5/8ths's or 5 1/2"). They one I looked at was a .357 (not a convertable) with the 4 5/8ths barrel. It felt really nice in my hand...well balanced.

One reason I want the .45 Colt/.45 ACP is I have a fair amount of .45 ACP ammo. Also, the .45 Colt can be charged with some pretty hot loads (close to .44 Magnum loads, so I have read) and the Blackhawk is a robust design.

Another revolver I handled was the S&W 625 Mountain Gun in .45 ACP. Super revolver!!! For those of you into .45 ACP...this is the revolver to get.

But, I want a western style this time around.

Maybe I'm watching too many Westerns on Turner Classic Movies!

nothing wrong with that I hunt in the south and when you got a mad 300# pig running at you I prefer the 44mag

I have severl Ruger firearms including a Super Blackhawk. The one thing that I can say about Ruger that I can't say about any other firearm is that every model that I've come across, seen or know somebody who has one, is well built. It's probably the only brand that you don't have to worry about buying junk or a model that should never have been built.

BTW, I do own (and carry) a Ruger SP 101 (3 1/16th barrel).
I'm a Taurus revolver fan (Glock 9 mm semi-autos too), but Rugers are definitely built!

Roy,
By way of background....I bought two Security-Six 4" when it came out; I've added one since. Don't think anyone has ever made a more durable or stronger .357. I own a 6" GP 100. I have owned two Blackhawks in .357, one Redhawk in 44 mag, and I think either 3 or 4 various Mark series semi-auto .22 pistols (one bull barrel, by far the best) and I can't count how many 10-22s (probably 6 or 7). I think Taurus makes one of the best values in the market over the past 10 years. I have owned Smiths and Colts and Dan Wessons and brands most have never heard of. I keep a Glock model 22 as my primary travel self-defense, a Mossberg Persuader at home. Everything has it's purpose. If you want an out-of-the-box accurate and sweet shooting SA, grab a Blackhawk.

I have never had a Ruger break. The Blackhawk is as sweet to shoot as it gets....provided you like SA shooting. My favorite revolver of all time for shooting was an old (vintage early 70s) Smith Model 14-4 in 6"...a K-38 Masterpiece I think. It's been a while (like 10 years:>) since I discussed this with the smith who did all my work, but he maintained that the virtually all stainless wears quicker in guns, as it abrades more readily than blued steel. He said a stainless carry gun or home gun was fine, but for a long-term shooter (like my Blackhawks and Redhawk) he strongly recommended I buy blued steel....and I did.

I gave that exact gun to my oldest son. It is a good shooter but a little hard to hold on to.
