Greetings,

I am getting my driveway paved with asphalt, and am looking for a rubber or composite blade edge insert for my 6 ft rear blade. My blade has a reversible steel edge now, so I am hoping to replace or cover that edge to prevent scarring the blacktop.

Anyone know where I can get such an item?

Thanks,

John

JohnYoung,

Welcome to TBN.

If you do a search you should find some information about various blade edges.

I bought one from here: FallLine.

Actually, I bought two. One for my small 42" lawn tractor snow plow which I used this past winter with good results. I also bought one for my new Woods HBL-72-2 rear blade, but I didn't get that until after the winter, so I won't get a chance to try it out until next winter.

I think their pricing is roughly by the cubic inch of material you use.

There might be similar companies closer to you and possibly cheaper too. I used FallLine because of a recommendation I read here on TBN.

This site is down for maint. for now, but when they get back up, do a search on "skid shoe". That may be what you need.

Horse stall mats at TSC or Southern States. 4'x6' = $40
Makes 4 12" blade edges. Squeegees the snow off the pavement real nice.

Rick,

Thanks. This sounds like what I'm looking for. I sent Falline an email asking for their recommendation.

About how much was the one for your 72" blade?

Regards,

John

I wish I could remember. I think(?) it was somewhere in the $100-$120 range, and that was for a 72"x6"x1" thick edge. The one for my smaller plow was 42"x4"x1" and I think that was around $50 or so. I drilled my own holes. I think there is a one dollar per hole charge. Drilling the holes using the original edge as a template is a piece of cake.

I want to say the entire order was somewhere around $170-$180 including shipping, but again, things are a bit fuzzy.

I like the edges because they are nice and quiet. I figured with a polyurethane edge, I won't need the skid shoes on the Woods blade. (The Woods skid shoes are about a $100 option. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)

I guess I'll find out next winter.

You might wish to look into that "horse mat" alternative too...sounds quite a bit cheaper. I have no idea how the two compare in terms of wear or scraping ability.

A project I haven't gotten around to is making a squeegee for my scraper blade. Raw material was free - I stopped and picked up a tread from a tractor trailer tire along the main highway. I plan on cutting (burning?) it with an angle grinder............chim

I made one from a horse stall mat for my 5' blade. It works pretty good except on wet snow that has been packed down. Then the blade will just ride up over the snow. I cut mine about 10" tall, then this coming winter I will put in on upside down and get a new edge. I cut mine with a jig saw and drilled it with a DeWalt battery drill, worked fine. Just take off your metal cutting edge, and mount the rubber mat between the metal edge and the blade letting it hang below the blade about 1", and bolt it back on. You may need to get longer bolts to go through the thicker material.
Good Luck

I know a guy that welded a 1-1/4 pipe on the cutting edge. He cut a slit length wise and slipped it over the edge. He said it really worked well in not cutting into the lawn and moved the snow well. I'm going to try it on a blade I have for the front of mine. I have a blade on the front and a blower on back. that way I can push the snow to the side and I only have to make one pass with the blower. faster that way

I knew I would get some good ideas and links if I asked here.

Thanks for proving me right (and all the great info).
