RTV 500 timing belt

Has anyone ever changed the timing belt on an RTV 500. The manual says change it at 1000 hrs. (it is at 1165). My main concern, is this a "clearance" engine meaning to me that the valves will not hit the pistons if the belt breaks. Is this something I can do? Is it something the dealer should do? Or just let it run till it breaks, or can it go longer? I am not a mechanic and any input would be a help.

Can't answer from experience on the RTV, but I'd invest in a shop manual to see what's involved...From doing them on cars, you do have to have some solid mechanical concepts going into this.

I suppose a person could find an online parts depiction; perhaps use that to decide-on the project complexity.
