John Deere 3520 (Sold this last fall, pending purchase of a 1026R)
It is time for the 50 hour service on my 3520 John Deere, my intent was to use Mobile 1, 5W-40, as I want a full synthetic; unfortunately it is no longer available locally. Our Wal-Mart stocked it at one time but has since changed to a 5W-30 SUV which is not suitable for a diesel. Royal Purple 15W-40 is readily available in our NAPA and O’Rileys however I know nothing about this oil. Have any of you ever used this oil, pros/cons?

One of the best engine oil manufacturers there is. You can't go wrong with Royal Purple. Like most top of the line oil manufacturers the price is higher than most but it's worth it. To get the most out of the oil though you may want to start doing UOA's (used oil analysis) to obtain your max oil change interval.

if you are looking for an alternative to Mobil at Wallyworld prices,, Wallyworld sells Rotella Synthetic,

last time I bought it was 14 bucks a gallon, which taint a bad deal for a gallon of synthetic anything.

It's a cheap oil because it's not the same group of synthetic as Royal Purple, Red Line and Amsoil. It's not in the same category. Not actually even close. That's been documented ad nausem here and all over the internet.

If you really like the "synthetic" Rotella, watch the ads at Rural King and you can get it for well under $3 a quart. Obviously you're not going to get a top quality synthetic oil for that price. But, it's all in what you want. The original poster asked about Royal Purple. It is one of the best synthetic oils available. To get that quality you will pay more than $3 a quart.

If I read between the lines correctly, the man couldn't purchase old reliable Delvac at Wally world and he was inquiring about Royal Purple.

I inferred that he liked shopping for commonly available lube oils at the local supercenter instead of being forced into buying from a particular vendor and mentioned that an optional product was available at Wallyworld.

If that goes against the grist of this thread and is so off topic as to be consdered offensive to the TBN members, I will apologize and will smite myself three times across the head with a piece of rebar as a form of penance.:p :p :p

That's alright, just wait and someone will post what I was waiting to see; I bought some "cheapo" Rotella "synthetic" for an old Jeep because RK was close and Rotella was about the cheapest oil besides their house "Harvest" brand. ;)

So, I now can't say that I've never used it. :)

John Deere sells a very good synthetic oil (15W-40 and 0w-40) they even allow extended oil changes (+50 % increase) while in warranty. I am considering the 0W-40 for my next change. Here is a link.

When couple years ago when I first researched synthetics Royal Purple was one of the brands identified as a very good choice. It's not available in my area. I run Mobil1. You may find that the cheaper synthetics are synthetic blends. That is to say they are a mix of dino oil and synthetic.

Does anyone on here have UNBIASED test results for all the oils? Which books would one get, to get the REAL facts? Does anyone have REAL WORLD results for the various oils? I hear a lot of people tell about which oil is best, but what I want is just good information. How does Royal Purple compare to Amsoil and others of that tier? What are the components of each that makes them better? What difference is there in those tier of oils and Rottella T synthetic oil? Give some real results, I could care less about assertations.

Oh, I agree, but you won't get that to happen here anymore. There used to be plenty of people who would post their test results with different oils and show where a particular oil performed considerably better than another oil. However, the vast majority of people here look only to price for their oil and become very, very upset if their oil isn't shown as the best. They claim everything from bad lab results, prior engine contamination, or lack there of, inconsistant fuel used etc., etc.

I used three different oils and ran lab tests on each a couple of years ago. I posted the results here and some people had absolute fits because their favorite brand of oil didn't test out to be the best. So, I have joined the ranks of "I couldn't care less what you use" here. I have no vested interest in any oil company and, believe it or not, couldn't possibly care less if you opt to use the brands of oil I use. However, I also have absolutely no desire to spend my time justifying lab results with guys who see no reason to pay over a couple bucks per quart. Hey, if they are happy getting free used oil from the recycle tank at Walmart, I'm happy for them. Most guys here seem to feel the same and won't share their lab test results or even published studies by labs because it upsets some guys to the point that they risk a stroke.

Sorry for a no answer, but I'd just suggest you use your best judgement and be happy. If you feel some oil costs more just because of the name only, I'm not going to bother to challange you nor will most other guys here. Good luck!
