Row Spacing

Just curios what everyones favorite row spacing is for a garden?

I am in the process of gettig a few single row equepment and working on a garden this year. My tractor is set with the rear R4's at 56" from center of tire to center of tire. Seems a little wide for single row spacing but not enough for two.

My grandparents Farmall was setup with 3 plows. One in the middle and one to each side of the rear tires. That way they could replow without disturbing the crops until they were taller than the bottom of the tractor.

The modern CUT, especially with industrial tires, is pretty wide for garden rows, as you have stated yourself. Take the outside measurement of your rear tires. Let's use 66" for this example. When straddling a row, you'd have 33" inches out either side to the edge of your tires. If you add 6" to each for the width of the plants, that total is 45". Thus, row spacing would be 45".

That is just one old country way of computing it.

My row spacing is 44" on most things, with spacing of 38" on things that do not spread and I can safely cultivate. If we had narrow Ag tires we could reduce those row spacing considerably. A disadvantage of the the R4.

When I had a little B7100 Kubota, I spaced my rows so I could drive between them, then when I moved up to a B2710 Kubota that was wider, I changed my spacing so I could straddle the rows until they were too tall. I had R1 tires on both tractors.

In other words, I agree with bp fick.

Well Looks like two row stuff just isn't going to work for me I have 36" between the inside of the rear tires. So looks like i may have to play around with it a little while even if I drive back in the same tire track on the return row at Single row equipment I will have a row spacing of 53" . Well looks like a trial and error job. []

I set my rear tire centers at 60" and planted crop at 30" center. Then offset my imlement so it covers one row at a time.OK with narrower tires.
Then I drive one way in the row--straddling two rows-- to do one row and reverse at the other end of the row to do the other row. Stay in the same tracks.
Did eons of corn this way.

We did our garden with a tractor for the first time this season -- I didn't actualy measure anything -- I just used the tractor itself to set the spacing -- I made a pass along the edge of the garden to get the first set of tire tracks. Then I turned around and put the tries just to the ouside edge of that first pass and went back the other way. I run R1 tires, so that left a good 6 inches or so extra for the plants to grow and room to work the cultivator. After the first 2 looked like good spacing, I put the middle buster down and did the whole garden that way -- worked out to be plenty of rows for us and had the whole laid out in a few minutes.

Similar to what was sid about measuring outside tire width, but measure from center of you draw bar to center of rear tire X2 gives the width between the rows. You might cheat a little and narrow row width a couple inches but more than that you run risk of digging to close to the row next to you that you are not straddling. Make sure when you set up your cultivator the outside tooth shanks do not run wider than outside of your rear wheel.

I have R1 tires, way tires are set I measured 22" center draw bar to center rear tire. I set my rows at 42" rather than 44".

With my BX2200 with Bar tires on it, I can plant and cultivate 36" rows by running the center of the front tire down the outside edge of my last set of tracks. For my planter, I added a single s-tine cultivator shank to the toolbar, to rip up the tire tracks to minimize the compaction from running over each set of tracks twice while planting.

The CK27 was 60" wide, I till a three foot row in the middle, and use the width of the R4 as the aisle way. Crops are planted in 1,2, or 3 rows in the 36" area depending on what is being planted. Somethings like lettuce mix will be planted densly.
