I'm in the market for a single row cultivator to cultivate about half an acre of field corn. I planted it on 36" rows which will be just right for my B3200 to straddle so I just need to pick up a single row cultivator now. I've looked at a few different units and they are all pretty similar. Attached are a couple pics of the three I am most interested in:

Leinbach #10 (w/heavy shank upgrade) $229

Leinbach #11 $279

County line from TSC (pic from Tartar gate who makes it) $250

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about the aforementioned cultivators? Do the standard points work okay or would small sweeps work better? Anyone have any pics of their cultivators in action?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I use a one row cultivator. Not only do I cultivate with it, but also use it for dirt prep, like a spring tooth drag harrow. Couldn't live without it.

I bought the King Kutter. Nothing fancy. Had coupon, caught a sale, and bargained with the manager at TSC and it was on my trailer for a couple hundred bucks. Money very well spent.

Cultivating corn is definitely one of my favorite jobs. I use a Farmall Cub with mounted cultivators which, in my opinion, is second to none when it comes to single row cultivation. I also plant in 36" rows. The Cub, with mounted cultivators, provides more ground clearance than those 3-point types shown in your photos so you can use it longer into the growing season. Also, the engine is offset, allowing you to look right at the row as your front set of shovels do their work. This lets you to take out weeds closer to the corn, and get on them while the corn is still very small. This is very similar to mowing with a mid-mount compared to a RFM when it comes to how close you can trim to an object. I put in 1-2 acres of sweetcorn each season, usually with 4-5 seperate planting dates, and also from 5-10 acres of fieldcorn. Since they dont make good RR sweetcorn, frequent and close cultivation is critical. The last few seasons I have been putting in RR fieldcorn, and with that I get by with a single cultivation when it is about a foot high. I have one of them 15 gal, 12v, spot-sprayers mounted on the side of my Cub like they sell at TSC for $89. I mounted the nozzle on a bracket that directs the spray onto the row, and I apply it (mixed 3-4 oz per gal) while cultivating. This year, Roundup has dropped in price big-time, so conservation aint such a big deal, but it is still nice to minimize usage. I also apply fertilizer only on the rows with my row-planter so the weeds tend to grow the most there. That Roundup application has more than doubled my fieldcorn yields compared to when I only cultivated a couple of times, and I save more than enough money in fuel, by skipping the second time, to pay for the spray. Amazingly, that single application of Roundup on the rows has cut my cost to produce a bushel of fieldcorn to about a third of what it was prior. There was a time when I hated to spray, but with what fuel costs these days, I am willing to take the risk. If you are going to be cutivating RR fieldcorn and decide to spray the rows, as I suggested, then any of those cultivators you showed would do an adequate job. If you dont want to spray however, I would look for a good, used Farmall Cub or Super A with mounted cultivators which can usually be had for $1k-$2k. One of the things I like best about cultivating is the immediate results when the job is finished. You dont have to wait a couple of weeks to see results like you do with herbicides. With my combo spray/cultivation, I get the best of both worlds - season long weed elimination, and a clean, cultivated field as soon as I am finished. Since they are practically giving away Roundup now (less than or equal to $10/gal), I am also going to walk my sweetcorn with a hand-sprayer instead of a hoe this year. My 10 hp, Farmall Cub is very efficient however so gas would have to get up over $10/gallon for me to ever stop cultivating. That should get me another year or two anyhow.

I bought the King Kutter at TSC, haven't had chance to use it for cultivating yet except for a little tillage in field prep. Works great for that too. Only advantage I can see in the Leinbach #11 is the slotted channel for infinite shank spacing.

Sweeps? First time or 2 probably not needed. depends on weed infestaion you have.

If you have weeds I would recommend sweeps. I personally like sweeps no matter what but if you have weeds you definately want sweeps.

The standards in your pics have shovels on them and I think they are more for seed bed preperation. Like others have said, replace the shovels with sweeps for weed control.

Thanks for the replies. So I guess some folks use sweeps and others use the standard points depending on how bad the weeds are. This is new ground I'm working with (was heavy sod) and my biggest problem is going to be grass. Might give one a try with the standard points and pick up a set of sweeps and give them a try.

I grew up on a hay/tobacco farm in NC, so I know all about Farmall Cubs and 140's. They are great cultivator tractors but not quite justified for my small patch. My B3200 has pretty high clearance for a small tractor (almost 15") so I think it will work pretty good.

The half rotted sod in the soil, if it was "virgin" like my ground, is a pain. I find it takes almost a year to fully rot away. My only advice might be to work up the ground, for example, you want to have for sweet corn NEXT year, now, if you have the luxury. Honestly, that soddy stuff is gnarly for awhile. Once it decomposes, I like using the cultivator as a harrow. It works very well.

There is no comparison using a rear 3 pt cultivator versus "the old days" when I spent my youth on a Massey Harris, looking down at my feet to cultivate, like a Farmall. That old iron cultivating was/is far superior to what these modern CUTs can do. No comparison.

I have the 1 row unit from TSC. It works pretty good, but I am in the process of building an S-Tine (Danish tine) cultivator w/ sweeps, and with liquid fertilizer shanks to replace it for row crop cultivating.

I also have the 1 row cultivator from TSC, it works great on my Massey, and my BIL's JD790. We share some tools.
