Frankly, I forget the name of the other stuff. I think it began with an 'S' (and wasn't Stabill)

Went out one day bought a bottle of high concentration Roundup. We have a small area, probably under 500 sq/ft where we cut some saplings and want no underbrush as most of it is poison ivy.

So I sprayed the area with Roundup. I was preparing to concoct a second gallon of it when my wife handed me a small bottle of this other stuff. I know the name, just can't think of it.

Anyways, mix he other stuff.

Literally, the next morning, the places I sprayed the other stuff was brown & shriveled. Today, a week later, the Roundup stuff looks like it's ailing but that's it. The Roundup stuff looks like I might have sprayed a diluted amount on it.

I know I didn't dilute it as I follow the directions and add another 1-2 ounces for some extra kick.

I was just floored that literally, the next day, the other spray had turned those weeds into shriveled nothings.

We have cats and dogs.....so using any of this stuff makes me nervous. I'm wondering is the other stuff better to use since it seems to kill so quickly. Perhaps its speed would help minimize some animal issues?

Can't believe I just bought a large (expensive) bottle of the concentrated Roundup and then made this discovery.

Check the Spectracide website, it has FAQs that include using it around pets.

My dad use to use roundup with a little success but it never worked all that great for me , and yes be careful around pets for sure . My dog gets into everything outside so I don't use any of that stuff anymore .

That is the way RU works and why people think it doesn't work. It takes time. First it kills the roots then the tops die - it takes 7-10 days, 7 days to begin to show results 10 days for th plant(s) to die.

BTW Sprying RU on an area to keep shoots from growing is another exercise in futility IT DOES NOT WORK EXCEPT ON PLANTS THAT ARE GEEN AND GROWING.

24D and its offshoots are good for quick kill of the top growth but does nothing for killing the roots of perennials.

Harry's got it right.

The Spectracide probably had some 2-4-D in it. That's great for broadleaf weeds.
Glysophate-N (Roundup and clones) is great for normal grasses.
Remedy is a really good brush killer.
I use all 3 on a fencerow, around the end of culverts, etc. Anywhere I want a total vegetation kill.

Just follow the directions, and you should be fine.

Spectracide is a brand name and could be any of many different pesticides. All Products | Spectracide Please read and understand the entire label BEFORE using any pesticide.

Roundup (active ingredient is glyphosate) is a systemic herbicide. This means that it is absorbed by the green parts of the plant and translocated throughout the plant to kill the entire plant. Normally, it is absorbed within about 24 hours, but it does take a week or so to kill a plant.

2,4-D is also a systemic herbicide, but usually works faster than glyphosate, however, 2,4-D is not very effective on grassy plants. It works better on broadleaf plants.

Other herbicides known as contact killers (as opposed to systemic killers) will work much faster, but usually will only kill the top part of the plant, and will not kill the roots.

Check with your county agent for recommendations on the proper products to use on your weeds.

I happened to have a 41% glyphosate label on my desk. Here's what it says about domestic animals:

This product is considered to be relatively nontoxic to dogs and other domestic animals; however, ingestion this product or lager amunts of freshly sprayed vegetation may result in temporary gastrointestinal irritation (vomiting, diarrhea , colic, etc). If such symptoms are observed, provide the animal with plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Call a veterinarian if symptoms persist more than than 24 hours.

That is the way RU works and why people think it doesn't work. It takes time. First it kills the roots then the tops die - it takes 7-10 days, 7 days to begin to show results 10 days for the plant(s) to die.

True -- you can't expect instant gratification with glyphosate, but that chemical is cost effective, especially if you are spraying large areas.

Poison ivy and many other plants need to be sprayed when they are young to get the best kill rate. As it gets older, it gets a waxy covering on the leaves which needs to be cut with a crop oil or if you do not have, try a dishwashing soap like Dawn. A few drops per gallon of mix is fine. It helps cut the surface tension to allow the herbicide get into the plant. You may also want to add 2,4D or a brush killer herbicide to the Roundup to help kill quicker. Older, established poison ivy areas as well as multiflora rose sometimes needs a few sprayings to kill it completely. There are plenty of other herbicides out there too, but if you do have pets, Roundup (glyphosate) is one of the safest. Good luck.

I use the TSC brand 41% Glyphosate. Much cheaper than Round up
