Round UP....Alternative..Weed, grass & Brush killer

I am getting prepared for spring and summer spraying with my 15 gallon spray rig...Look what I found at Home Depot as an alternative to the expensive Round Up....I read the 2 reviews and they seem fine...This is a concentrate and the same amount of Round Up would cost abut $160.00 or so...This costs $39.95

Brin I have used the same off brand stuff from TSC, works great. However, I have been reading more and more articles on Glyphospate being much more harmful than initially thought. I have lost 5 hives of bees and gave up on them last year...don't know if it is related to pesticide, but I have my suspicions.

It really harms aquatic critters the most, and since I live on a big creek with bottom land pastures, I think I am going to try and find some other way to clear my fence lines. A propane burner is one option, but I might just have to dust off the old sling blade:thumbsup:

The last think I read on bee hive loss was that they had pretty good evidence it is a mite or some such that is killing off the hives. Time will tell.

I usually do not spray but last year I did and spent quite a bit on round up. Spraying was faster and easier than mowing. I will have to try this product.

Motor...I had a conversation with one of our conservation agents about Glyphospate in Round up and other products regarding safety...He said..it is absorbed by the foliage on the plant and not the soil...in other words the foliage acts as a wick and directs the poison to the roots of the plant and there is no residue in the soil...it is only active until it drys...so if it is a sunny day...maybe 2 hrs. and it is absorbed into the plant or gone..I have even carefully sprayed the weeds along the bank of my lake with no ill effects for several years now using round up...you just have to be careful that no over spray gets directly into the water.

Mites, beetles, wax moths, the list is long. The common thread is that the bee's no longer seem to be able to fend off or protect their hives like they did 40 years ago. I believe this weakness is related to all the chemicals we spray. For me I am going to try some alternatives this year.

both of those herbicides are effective but, if you choose to use them take the time and calibrate the flow rate of your sprayer just to make sure that you are useing the right amount. I mostly use pronoun, velpar, and spartan all 3 are much more expensive than those 2 that you are thinking about but for what I use them for roundup and glyphosfate dont fit the bill.

Brin I used to think the same and like you I have sprayed a lot of it. Did you read the Wik article...? I'm not telling you not to use it, but we might want to use it sparingly and away from any water source. Not using it really sucks, because it works fantastic....

I use glyfosphate around the nursery all the time and it has a surfacant that causes the chemical to adhere to the foliage and it is rendered inert in the ground. I don't have the booklet with me bit I think it states that it should not be sprayed during bee active hours.which I think is early.morning. it is best to spray on a sunny, dry day with no wind as drift is a real issue. Like I said I use it a lot ,yet I still see honey bees everywhere.
