Rough times for whitetails?

I used to be an avid hunter in my younger years here in PA. Sadly, I've killed more deer with my car than I ever did with a rifle.

Not much of a hunter here, so I’ve definitely killed more with cars & trucks.

I'm an avid hunter but but have never hit a deer with a vehicle, couple of dogs and lots of other critters. Maybe be because I'm always looking for deer at the edges

Here in East Texas, it's more common to hit a wild hog then a deer.

Oddly, the next most common road kills are beavers and armadillos. Seems like there is a time of year when they start to wonder on the roads, and you see them dead along the roads everywhere!!!!

We have an over population of doe's here in Michigan and the DNR is requesting hunters to shoot them instead of bucks. I have no issue doing that as I prefer doe meat over buck meat as it's less gamey tasting. I only take does and always been that way. Not interested in having another mount on the walls, I have enough as it is. No Whitetail mounts. Elk, Mule Deer and bear only.

I hit an Armadillo once , boy did that make a racket.
I have had deer run into my car with no damage, but so far have been lucky.
We have bits of deer fur on my wifes care from tow deer jumps out of the woods events. She reacted fast enough in both cases the deer were fine and wandered off without limping.

We have seen a few hit, and have plenty of dead ones along the road.
At night it's not unusual to have 2-3 wander into the road on a five mile drive.

Luckily I only need to clean up carcasses on my property, the main road is taken care of by the town. We just call them and within a few days the carcass is gone.

Last cleanup on my property was only one leg, no idea where the rest went and didn't smell it. Vultures, and who knows what else was helping us out. We have seen one coyote in 8 years on the game cam, maybe it's still around?
We have lots of vultures, good at pointing out if we have a dead animal on the property.
If it's in the brush I might drag it out a bit for them, bury anything left.

Sunday a near miss, i was doing 44 mph at the time and braking hard.... Next morning one about got my wife near the same area, it came running thru the field and put on it's brakes just before slamming into the side of the car.

I have a healthy population of deer on my land with 11 bucks I am watching. There are 3 that are my target bucks for this season. I will also take a couple of doe this season in addition to the buck.

It's not the doe crossing in front that's the problem. It's the buck chasing her that slams into the side of the vehicle, often coming thru the window. I took care of several patients in the ED and on the ambulance that had that happen.

Watching the road edges does no good here in PA. Too many miles of 55 mph roads with little or no shoulder. A deer can step out from behind a tree and be in the roadway in an instant. Sure, you can slow down and do 20 mph in a 55 zone but then you become a road block.
