very close, spark jumps.

that's the design anyway... occasionally you see ill fitting parts yeilding broke rotors, or caps with grooved contacts and a pile of brass dust coating everything. this is usually preceded by a wobbling cap as it is running..

The button is in the cap, the rotor does touch the button, but it doesn't touch the distributor terminals. That's why they are replaced occasionally, the arching causes wear and a higher resistance as they do wear, just like spar plugs. There is a built in resistance but too much causes arching in unwanted area.
