It's time to change the blades on my Land Pride RCR1548. The manual says the nut is a "1 1/8 - 12". By my measurement, 1 1/8 refers to the diameter of the bolt. What size wrench do I need for the nut?

The nut is all gunked up, and it's about 2" down in a hole, so when I try to put calipers on it, I get all kinds of different numbers, from 1-1/2" to 1-5/8". I called the dealer; he said he didn't know, nobody had ever asked before. A source that looks reliable says the nut ought to be 1-11/16", or maybe 1-13/16" if it's heavy.

Sears will sell me a 1-11/16 socket, but not a 1-13/16 socket. The price is high enough I'd rather not buy two, anyway. Any advice?

1.6875 (1 11/6ths) is the standard size.
No way to tell if it's a special nut unless you call Land Pride or, if there's a auto shop nearby (or your dealer), borrow the socket and see if it fits.

If you borrow or buy a socket, I suggest you get a 6-point impact type with a 3/4 drive. That, a good breaker bar and a 6 foot cheater.

I Use a 650lb air gun, it is worth buying one if you don't have it

If it does not cooperate, I like the "hot wrench" Ken Sweet

(google, google) I'll pass on the hot wrench, thanks. I'm going to try muscle power, first, but the pneumatic wrench is a good idea. I'm about to apply 450 ft-lb of torque to a nut on a 400-lb implement on jack stands, and I'd like to start very slowly.

Then I suggest you use that cheater bar and stand along side (not underneath) the cutter when you break that nut loose. Good steady pull is best, but might not work.
Might be worthwhile spraying some pentrating oil on and around the nut a few hours or a day before.

Wow! You are one strong dude! That's a heavy air gun.

(sorry, just felt like being goofy -- we all know you meant ft-lb;))

While 650 ft-lb may be enough, it may also sit there and laugh at it. I had to move up to a CP Turbo that has 1000ft-lb of reverse. It makes a huge difference! Especially if you don't want to replace seals that may smoke from an O/AC torch warming up the nuts.

Does anyone know for sure if it is right hand thread?
I would go to a cheap tool place and get the tools from them if you are not going to do a lot of this, or talk to you neighbors, they may have what you need.
Just a thought!
