ROPS for older John Deere tractors

Folks, for those of you who have an older JD tractor like my 650 which did not come with a roll over protection system, you can purchase from your local dealer at what I consider low cost. I paid $450 plus sales tax for the entire set up with instructions, seat belt and all the needed bolts. This is metric BTW, and a air impact wrench(s) helps.

Took about 4 hours to install, and you need some sort of hoist to hold up the roll bar when installing, as you need to start bolts in an awkward position. As I understand there are lots of deaths every year from this type of hazard. If you don't think you need it, buy it for your wife and kids....

I wonder if ROPS was an option. My 650 had it. JC

Back in '84 when my Dad got his 650, it was an option... I think a few years later ROPS became standard equipment.

Over the summer I installed a ROPS on my 650 because my son will be using it someday. I also bought the original JD kit for 450.00 from my dealer. Installation went as described and an extra set of hands would have beeen useful. Also there is a rebate program in New York state if you are a resident that sends you back 70% of your purchase after you go through a very easy application process. This program is for any tractor. Dealer stated that they sell these kits at cost, thus the reasonable sounding cost. I hope mine shows up soon!

ROPS for a JD 650

Thanks, guys- I should clarify- I have a roll bar on the tractor but since I had a 3" oak branch fall 20 feet on the to tractor seat ( while I was playing with the tire chains) I was looking for a Kabota type ROPS that was more than just the roll bar.

My dealer told me the same thing, JD is selling the ROPS at cost. They even gave me (as in FREE) a shield kit for my 2030 to prevent someone from jumping the starter solinoid and starting the tractor, possibly in gear.

I should get the ROPS for the 2030. wonder if MI has a similar program to NY?

Deere has done that for 25-30 years.

All of the 50 series came with ROPS after 1981 I believe...But alot of owners had them removed becuase they would'nt clear a garage door opening...they're compact tractors afterall, they're suppose to fit into smaller spaces :laughing:
