OK, so the engine(s) aren't in one of my tractors, but in my trawler - Grand Banks / American Marine marinized Deere 6404 tractor engines with Roosa Master DM injection pumps.
One engine, particularly when warm, occasionally stalls following shifting into gear from neutral (i.e. applying a load, but still at idle). Neutral idle is about 800 RPM. When load is applied the revs on that engine will dip to about 500 rpm. Sometimes RPMs continue to drop and it dies, sometimes it recovers after 2-3 seconds to a steady governed 800 rpm. I recall it dying a time or two when quickly throttling back to idle from cruise (1250-1400rpm) while still in gear. The other engine handles the step load just fine without faltering. If I throttle up to around 900 rpm in neutral I can shift without stall, but that's rather aggressive for docking maneuvers (7.5-8kn at 1250rpm, about 4.5-5kn at 800 rpm), albeit better than stalling - I have to run down and around the boat to the main helm inside to restart.
I'm looking for suggestions/advise as to what might be wrong, and whether it something I can fix or if it has to be taken in to a shop. I've taken apart and repaired/adjusted a couple inline and rotary pumps successfully, but they were all "more broken" than this one so the risks were worth it...
