It's (metal)done all the time. Screw you some 1x4's to the roof about 16" oc...Might be able to go 24" oc check with the metel people. Then screw youe mettel to that. If you get a lot of wind and storms out that way use lost of screws near the ends and edges because if it started to go the whole thing will go

there are a couple few companies which specilize in putting a false roof over old mobile homes. they build a 2x6 roof trus/frame work and insulate between OLD roof and the NEW roof and lay sheeting and roof it just like normal or use steel, I think prices was some where in the 1200 to 2400 price range. we get rural liing cooperative books for heat & electric they advertize in back those a lot as well as in popular mechanics & other rural type magizines...

anyhow these NEW roofs are not FLAT but have a center pitch to them. I think they take 8~10' 2x8's and cut them diagonally so there is say 2" on out side edge and 6" on the center this makes the water run off much better than the old flat types... also check local contractors as ROOFING is somethign that is usually so competive that it can be DONE for a little over the cost of buying the materials for you're self... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif;)

I assumed if he had shingles it was pitched already and they were over OSB or plywood. If so no need foe a frame. I have seem lots of those frame types come down this summer with the three hurricanes

Be carefull about the weight you are adding. Most MH's will not suport very much added weight on the roof. The walls will start to sag and you will have a mess.

Check out this site for info on how to do it right...
MobileHomeRepair.com

He also has a message board, good info on repairing and upgrading Mobile Homes. There is a fairly curent thread posted by a guy that is fixing his saging walls due to the prvious owners new roof.

We just did one last week with galvalum panels that I bought from the Metal Depot in Baytown. This is a 12 X 35 with an addition. Since you're in the Houston area I'll PM you my phone number and you can come over and check it out if you like. I'm on the east side of town, near Channelview.

Thanks guys for feedback! Yeah it has shingles!, so I'd be reroofing either over shingles or tearing them off! One good point is about weight! Another was about centering 1by4's and screwing into them! A question is "Do I really need them or could I get longer screws & go directly into plywood sheathing(if shingles stay or go)!" Will ck Metal Depot ASAP! Wanted to thank U guys, Chucko, Spiker, Bob Reeves & Bgott for all info! BTW Bgott I live right behind that Metal Depot about 15 miles or so!! Bet we got some c-view things in common!!!

I lined the roof with 15# felt, then I laid 2x4 purlins.I figure the 2x's give the screws a little more bite. The boys at the Metal Depot recommended screwing the panels every 30". They recommend a screw every 20" where the panels lap. I wouldn't go directly over the plywood or old roof, the purlins give you an air gap that should let condensation evaporate and vent out of the ends. That's just my opinion, I'm not an expert at this by no means. One mistake I might have made, I used pressure treated lumber. Pressure treated lumber is now treated with ACQ, whatever that means. I might have a problem in the future from having the galvalum panels in proximity to the treated wood. I extended the roof over the porch, on PT lumber, so I ought to be able to watch for corrosion. I'll let everybody know how long it takes for holes to start appearing.

Most shingle companies will not honor their warranty when shingles are put over another layer of shingles.

It's quite common in my part of the country to put a second layer of shingles on a roof, and sometimes even a third layer, on site built houses, but it's my understanding that it's not done on mobile homes because they aren't designed for the additional weight.
