Robin engine sputters when shutting down \"hot\"....

After running my 422 with the Robin engine for awhile and the engine good & hot I get what used to be called "pre-ignition" in the older cars, when shutting off.......engine sputters a couple of times..knocks once or twice and then shuts down. Is this a carb setting that needs to be adjusted....poor gasoline...or what? Thought I would ask this here before calling PT on it...doesn't seem to be anything harmful, but I would rather that it just shuts down and not sputter..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Robin engine sputters when shutting down \"hot\"....

I can make my Kohler do the same thing. I now run it down to 1/3-1/4 throttle and let it sit there for a minute after long running periods, longer if the hydraulics are really hot(I stick my hand over the fan and feel the air. After a while you can judge when it is extremely hot VS normal hot). Then I pull the throttle back to idle, wait a few seconds and shut it off with no problems. Hope this helps.

Re: Robin engine sputters when shutting down \"hot\"....

MR...that was a quick response!....I normally do decrease the throttle to about 1/4 prior to shut down...maybe I'll let it idle a little longer. I've worked it fairly hard since last week...cutting, loading, digging.....the engine compartment gets a lot of debris in it....is there any problem in blowing all that stuff out with my leaf blower? I don't want any sawdust or clippings getting forced into somewhere they shouldn't???

Mine was doing the same. Clean the air filter pre-cleaner (just bang any dirt loose) and loosen the throttle connection on the engine a 1/4 turn. I believe it's a 9/16 bolt on the top of the engine where your throttle cable meets the throttle lever. This should do the trick. Also a good idea to let it idle at lowest setting for a minute prior to shutdown. The loosened throttle bolt should give you more response on your throttle as well.

Moss is right, you definately should let it idle for a minute or so, especially now when it's warm out. That should help you out. Also, in regards to the engine mounting area in your PT, always make sure that this area is clean, always.

Re: Robin engine sputters when shutting down \"hot\"....

ok...sounds good...as far as keeping this area clean...I'm just concerned about doing it with forced air out of a leaf blower...am I taking a chance for small debris geting into somewhere it doesn't belong????,......this is the most convenient way of keeping that compartment clean since it's failry crowded in there. Also, in looking at where the oil filter is...just how do you get one out and a new one in? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think this question should be directed at the PT users that have already done the service on a Robin engine, sorry I just don't get to see the PT machines very often, I'm sure someone from the board will have an answer for you.

Very tuff job, go in with a small strap wrench with your right hand under the tank support reach in and get strap on with left hand. GOOD LUCK! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Robin engine sputters when shutting down \"hot\"....

to change the oil filter first remove the heat shield, then undo the 2 bolts holding the fuel tank in place, move the tank over slightly. this will give you enough room to reach in and remove and replace the oil filter. good luck.

We blow our engine compartment out with compressed air, paying particular attention to getting the debris, if any, out of the engine cooling shroud and cylinder head fins. That's with the Kohler; I don't see why the Robin would be any different.
