I operated a lattice boom P&H Crane on a CCC 10 wheel truck. The boom was 50' and the jib was 30'. While driving on
the road the jib was chained underneath the boom. The boom stuck out in front of the Crane about 33'. The Crane length
while driving was 67'. The boom would be in the cradle next to the cab, but not set down, but kept in the air a few inches to
keep from bending the boom when bouncing. When driving on the road the front end of the boom was about 12 1/2' feet
high. You had to be careful, because when hitting bumps the front end of boom could bounce 1 1/2'. Overpasses are at least
13 1/2' or more. If I were to hit an overpass at 45 mph the only thing that would be left in the cab would be my boots.
I have never understood how they do this with dump trucks, don't they every look in their mirror. I read where most modern
dump trucks have an alarm for this.
