09112,

Sounds good to me. That was a good way to get the old one off too.

Just want to say that I have baked that ring gear up to 500f for some time and it has not expanded enough to go on to the clutch plate. I started of at 350 then went to 400 and continued to increase the heat until I hit the max on my oven and it still wouldn't go. Prior to heating the gear I also had the plate in the freezer for some 18 hours. The heating process took something like 75 minutes. Sooo, it's off to my local mechanic and have him do the job. I thank y'all for the input.

And please come back and tell us how easy it was?

After reading the replies and looking at video I really did think it would be a snap. Unfortunately, 500f was the max I could heat it. Now that it's in the hands of my mechanic and I don't have to see what he's doing, the pressure is off for me. Real gut churner the first time I have to tackle mechanical jobs. My original post asked if special equipment was needed. The bonfire looks better all the time, but I wonder, at what temp does the metal begin to loose it's temper? Seems I read recently that 500 degrees was the point, but obviously I'm wrong on that point.

If you used the fire u could see the color change and tri it on . If it did not fit then you leeve it in the fire for a bit longer.

Perhaps next time. For 21 bucks I got the job done and have everything back together. Running good now except for a leak in the intake manifold which I'll take care of today. My two year project is 99% done with. Now, what to do with it. It's probably worth 12 to 15 hundred bucks and I have over 3 grand in it. Perhaps it will make a good ornament in the pasture next to the road.
