Rigt $$ ? JD 950 w/ FEL and Model 8 Backhoe

Hi All,

I'm considering a 950 with FEL and model 8 Backhoe. It is 4x4 with ag tires and really in pretty nice shape at just under 900hrs. The asking price is $14,500.

Hows it sound?

It would have to be in excellent condition, paint, rubber and all. it is at least about 19 years old, ruber hoses start to dryrot b4 then. New 990 TLB is about $25,000....

The last year the 950 was in production was 1989, the used retail price on the high side is $8100 for the base 4WD tractor. It has a Yanmar 3 cyl, 104 ci, 8F-2R tranny, 27.3 PTO HP, and weighs 3405 lbs, again, base tractor.

Sounds like $14K might be a tad high, offer him $10K and maybe he would take $12K for it, again, what overall condition is it in? Does he have manuals? Original owner? Any touch-up paint? How clean are the oils? Engine compartment? etc? Blow-by at start-up?

2nd owner, hoses on the hoe have been replaced due to dry rot within the last year. Touch up paint on the nose. I would say 70-80% left on the tires ... runs clean. There is a comlete manual and detailer maintenance history.

As you can guess I'm leaning towards it. Setting the actual age aside the hours are low and at $14ish its still a heck of a lot lower investment than a new unit. Plans are to dig a few stumps and clean the driveway in the winter.

Sounds a little high for the machine. However, you are the one who will have the last say. One thing to consider with an older machine is if you intend to keep it forever. I own a "92" JD 770 with a FEL and a BH. The tractor is a great machine and I got it at a good price but there are a lot of little things to repair and replace as you use it. I recently had an urge to upgrade and the trade in value was an insult and selling it outright has had it's looks but no takers for what I got in it so I am going to keep it and invest in some rebuild kits for the hydraulics. Nothing wrong with saving money on used equipment but be prepared to keep it in the long run.

The price is a shade on the high side but not alot... and if the tires and the pins and hoses are good --- well, you might get 'em down $1,500 - $2,000.

When I decided to sell my JD970, I looked at the deal in parts... The Model 80 FEL was in very good condition and after lookin' thru MachineFinder, etc. I figured it was worth around $2,500 - $2,750. Even a fairly junk 80 is goin' for $2K.

The 8A hoe I had was low hours; maybe 250 total. So, I figured it was worth around $5K. The model 8 is an older hoe but if it's fairly tight (pins), bucket square and teeth, OK, cylinders dry -- and has new hydraulic lines -- I could imagine it bein' worth around $4K.

That's around $6K for the loader and hoe.

What shape is the tractor in? Rubber @ 70-80%; how's the clutch and brakes? Got a good seat? You can put $200 into a new seat... 900 hours is pretty low time for these tractors. The tranny solid? Stays in gear, etc. 4x4 work the way it's supposed to? If the tractor is decent on those items -- you probably shouldn't loose a whole lotta sleep givin' him $6-7K for it --- IMO.
