Anyone know of an inexpensive way to repair a worn out electric pto clutch on my lawntractor Husquarvarn lt145?

Im tired of dumping money into this ancient mower and the clutches are 250 bucks parts only.

My riding lawn tractor has a mechanical lever to apply a spring loaded idler pulley to tighten the belt on my deck. I have had this mower for 13 years and never had a lick of trouble, and still using the original belt and pulleys. About 400 hours on the mower.

I have seen some pulleys at the hardware store that could replace the electric PTO, and if you are mechanically minded with a few tools, I think you could manufacture a lever system and movable idler pulley for probably less tha a $100. bucks, and it would most likely last a lifetime.

If you feel mechanically inclined, I suppose you can buy an auto air conditioner clutch and find a way to mount it in place of the electric PTO. AC clutches rarely fail.

Do these clutches have the adjustable air gap on them? I.e. three or four spring loaded bolts on the perimeter? If yes keep this airgap adjusted to around .010 inches. It will make the clutches last a lot longer. Also keep them adjusted evenly. I.e. same air gap at all of the adjusting points.

To much air gap and the clutch does not engage fully which causes the coil to overheat and also allows the clutch plates to slip under load which increases the air gap.

Good luck

well, according to my owners manual, it is supposed to have the adjustable, but whats on the mower is not...lol.

and Jinman, you must be kidding, A/C clutches go out all the time, I think that was my first set of specialized automotive tools I bought in my teens was the A/C clutch removal tools...lol, and put them into good use. Not a bad idea however.

I have used these elec clutches for a good many years. I don't believe there is a kit to rebuild them. Most of mine had the adjustable nuts on the assembly. It would be good if they had replaceable pads for the clutches.

I believe AC clutches are tapered, but not positive. and the shafts are small.

Someone probably switched out the old clutch for a cheaper or similar one.

Maybe I should have said, "By comparison, A/C clutches are more reliable." I have never had an AC clutch fail with over a dozen AC cars/pickups owned. Those clutches open and close thousands of times during their lives because they cycle on/off with the thermostat. I'm sure they do fail and an AC repairman would see only the failures. I just think that the majority of them are much more reliable than some lawnmower PTO electric clutches. I don't know if they are as strong, but I do think they are more reliable.

lol, you could very well be right that they are more reliable than a lawnmower clutch...still a very interesting idea. I just had to laugh when I saw you post because it brought back nightmares of every used car I've ever owned and the running bets on how long the AC would last before clutch/compressor seizure.
