2015 Kubota L5740
I've got my good ol' Rice Lugs, and also some nice Turf's off a kubota that I use in the summer. Moving snow, the lugs don't seem to give as much traction as I thought.... Is it worth trying the turfs? (I am 2wheel drive). I have my box scrapper on the back.. Land is completely flat. I am working on a gravel driveway..

Opinions?

I've owned a 1966 Bolens garden tractor with turf tires for 44 years and it was helpless without chains.
I swore The next tractor would have Bar Tires .
A couple of years ago i bought a CC GC2554 with Bar Tires and found I had much better traction with them .

LBrown,

Where are you from? I moved away from Strasburg, Bolivar about 5 years ago. I saw you list "south of Canton".

Canton is like a 2Nd home to me since most of Dads reletives moved there back in the depression days.

Can't go back to the deppression days, both sides of my family moved to Ohio from WV. back in the day Mom and Dads. Coal miners Daughter or should I say ers. thats the way it was. All my Aunts and Uncles went that way. IMO Cinnci. was like Vegas to them:D

Back on subject. I have lugs on a 2wd Hands Down IMO that is the way to go or your best bet. Being from up there and Knowing what the Winters are like I would try to upgrade to a 4wd and Fel. My grandfather got by with a
2wd and a FEL. on a old 8n since the 50's.no such a thing as a 4wd tractor back then. How they do it, got me? but they did it:cool:

I've noticed that the rice tires don't give near the traction as the American style lugged tires.

I also have 2 sets of tires for my YM 2500. The turfs do not work for pushing snow. The rice tires actually do pretty well with a 6 foot scraper blade but you must use the differential lock all of the time the blade is down. The difference is amazing between locked differential and not locked. We had 14+ inches of snow last friday night and I was able to push it off of a 200 foot gravel driveway and parking area in about an hour. If the snow is 6 inches or less, it takes about 20 minutes.

Not really supposed to use diff lock unless on a slippery surface to allow tires to slip as to not bust gears etc. But i guess ice coverd pavement counts?

anything less than a 4x4 or a 2wd with chains I would think regardless of tires your not going to get much traction on snow & ice that has already been compacted, our Cut tractors just has not enough weight to gain traction on the slick stuff;)
Now the ricer tires do get IMO better traction then standard AG tires will,
I used to have 3" lugs AG on my smaller Kubota and would go through red clay mud which is the next thing to axle grease here in Ga. with not much effort, Ice & snow might have been another story... I have notice that with the larger More Hp tractor I have now, the gearing is higher and tends to spin the tires in the least wet ground, Plus this tractor has the standard lugged ag tires only little more than 1" lugs which provides less traction,
What speed gear are you using when trying to work through the snow/ice?
you might drop to the lower gear range . like low 2 or low 3
