Retired After a Hard Life

My oldest son and I went for a photo walk this afternoon. He's working on Photography Merit Badge for Scouts. I knew there was some retired equipment in the woods adjacent to our property so I grabbed this shot of a well used Deere...

Not bad, Rob, but I kinda wish you'd made another picture from a little farther back to show the whole thing better. I'll have to admit I'm not real sure just what that Deere is. A planter maybe?

Not sure what that is, but I agree, it looks like a planter.

Too bad that is adjacent, not on your property. I've seen some of those old Deere parts go for big money at Auctions.

Looks like a corn planter to me.The cylinder is where the seed goes goes and the rings go in the bottom and turn picking up individual seeds and drop them into the furrow for planting. We had a small acreage growing up and Dad had a similar planter. Ours was originally made to be pulled by horses but Dad had a B Allis Chalmers. I rode the planter running it while he drove the tractor.

Yes, it's a planter. A wider view had too much other clutter in it (trees etc.). I'm surprised to see all the "gears" still tied to each bin with baling twine (it's a two row). I presume there are different "gears" for different seeds/spacing? neat old machine, but I'm afraid it's well beyond it's usefulness.

Thanks for the picture. It brings back fond memories of the farm in southwest Georgia in the early 50's
