Hello folks,

Question....actually two. Can a basic exterior door be replaced with a door of the same dimensions or will the whole package need to be replaced such as the framing/jam? Wondering if hinges and door latches would line up or most likely would I have some chiseling to do?

Second... Any simple tips or tricks to fix an interior door from drifting half way closed? I thought I read somewhere to bend the hinge pins a certain way by smacking them with a hammer, don't know if this would work.

I know you can get a door blank without any holes or hinge cutouts. You might have to go to a real lumber yard. But you may be able to order it at the box stores.

Take the original door off and duplicate the hinge and hole layout.

If you can find out who made the original door you may be able to purchase a new pre-hung and just swap it out. Just measure it first.

Take a string with a weight and hang it along the upper hinge. The hinges should all line up. I wouldn't just hammer the hinge, you might have to rehang the door to get it to work correctly.

On one I put a little magnetic door closer for a kitchen cabinet on the upper corner where it wouldn't be noticed. That did the job inconspicuously.

For the swinging door pull one of the hinge pins and bend it very slightly. That may stop the unwanted swinging.

For a new door do some measuring.

Put a level to the door jamb and see if it is out of level causing the door to swing.

Sometimes you can pull an out of level jamb back into level by putting a long screw into the stud behind it in place of a hinge screw. It depends on whether there's any space between the jamb and the stud to let this happen. If there's no space to take up, then a screw won't work.

A lot of carpenters can't hang doors, right.
