Repower a Mott T38 Flail Mower

I bought a used Mott T38 Flail mower and the engine on it is is rough shape. The carb is nothing I have seen before and its leaking fuel everywhere and when fuel is in the take it floods the carb so the float needle valve if it has one isnt working right. I think its an 8hp engine based on info Ive found about this mower on the web.

My question is, the engine looks like it may be internally geared (down??) as it looks like the case extends out to the PTO side and may be a gearing housing. I want to know if I can just repower it with another 8hp motor and do away with the issues of this ole engine.

I bought a used one at an auction several years ago. That owner replaced the original engine with a 10 hp engine off a generator his son had fried. No gear reduction on it, but when you started it, it went to WOT, no idling. It never failed to start beyond the second pull. I built the offset tongue, so I could mow along the fence, and not mash the grass down first. Putting the transmission in the low side, and first gear on the Wheel Horse, I could mow Rye Grass 30"-36" tall with no problem, barbering up around the hay field.

I liked it well enough, I thought I'd like a bigger 3 pt. one to groom the pasture, and sold it. A couple times, wish I stil had it.

Not sure how a Predator engine from HF would hold up, and not sure what HP engines they handle now, but it might be worth a shot.

Hi thanks for the info and the pictures, I like your offset hitch and how you made it, I may try to do something like that as well to do along the side of the roads where we walk our dogs so we can avoid ticks!

My engagement level is missing, would you have a picture that shows how it works to pull and hold the spring tight?

This is the best picture I have of it. The hole behind the knob to engage it, is elongated. Notice the rod welded to the main rod to pull on to engage it. The rod welded to it, has a slight half "Y", that when you pull back, you let it drop and catch. When you release it, it raises up at such an angle, it locks itself in place. I'd have to say the PO made this, and it worked well. He is a machinist, and it was well made. The bracket with the elongated hole looks to be a piece of angle iron, guessing it's at least 2" X 2", and at least 1/8" thick.

If you do a Goolge search, there are several places to download aparts manual for the T38 for free. I'm thinking I got my copy from a garden tractor forum, but can't remember which one, I belong to more than several
