I have a McCulloch chainsaw and need a new chain. Are they universal or do I need to get one for the McCulloch? Where is a good place to get a good replacement chain?

i don't have that saw but i get my chains at the local small engine repair shop. you just need to know the pitch and the number of drive links. the guy at the store will offer you different style chains and explain what makes them different. if your not sure about what to get bring the old one with you.

I highly recommend the Oregon chains listed above. You cana also buy chain and bar combos from them if your bar is worn out.

I have an old Homelite that is pushing 20 years old and could not find a chain for it in the local home stores (got one that was supposed to fit it and it did not). Got a bar and chain combo from an online Oregon chain retailer and its like a new saw.

Also, some places, like our local Farmers Exchange (feed and seed) can make chains to fit your saw.

I have an old McCullough that I inherited and just bought spare chains for it at a Stihl dealer when I was buying chains for my other saws. Cuts OK but its noisy and leaky  Take the old chain with you.

Gary, there are many variables on bars and chains but the biggies are:
- chain pitch = measure between any 3 rivet centerlines and divide by 2. Common for smaller saws are 3/8" and .325" pitch

- chain gauge = this is the width of the driver link and slot that goes around circumference of bar needs to match. Common size on smaller saw is .050"

- length = bar length is in inches, so your bar is probably 14, 16, or 18" but chain is usually measured by the number of Drive Links (DL) needed to make a loop

The easy way is to remove the bar and look for this info to be stamped on the side of bar where it mounts over the two studs on the saw or just take the bar with you to saw shop, Lowes, WallMart, or Home Depot. (You will want to take it off and clean it up anyway, especially clean the groove out.)

Someone suggested Oregon replacement chains and I found my make&model on the site. I just picked up a new chain at TSC.

Before I found the replacement part number, i stopped at Lowes and a very helpful guy told me that McCulloch took odd style chains and they did not stock them. It tuens out that my 3818av took a rather common chain.

I have a big pile of wood from a prior project and can't wait to try this out.

Some older Macs used different chains, but the modern ones are all pretty much normal stuff. Oregons' bar and chain selector worked well for you. I use it, like it a lot.
