Yup, got tired of putting the battery charger on her every few weeks, and reading the advice here decided to look in to the replacement strategy. After googling the wiring for Delco alternators (most recommended using the three wire) 10 SI or 12 SI alternator. So went into town priced them at a local cut rate auto parts store $30. I left the store with it. Actually cost $45 with core charge.
Since the regulator that I have blown twice now cost over $80 bucks. I think this is a deal/steal.
OK, what did it take? Two bolts, and a bunch (7-8) of washers. Replace the 8M 60 Cent 1.25 thread bolt with a longer 80 Cent. Take the front of the alternator off and drill out the other mounting hole to 10 Mill. Don't worry it's easy. One nut to take the pulley/fan off. then turn it over and take out the four small bolts holding the cases together. DO NOT TAKE OUT THE ?STATOR? YA'KNOW THAT CENTER PIECE THAT SPINS. If you do, you learn how to replace the now loose brushes.
After drilling out the hole, look to see if you need to reindex the alternator (turn the case to better fit/match.) Put it back together. Mount it on the tractor. I left the charging light unconnected, for now.
You might need a slightly longer belt. With new belt, new charging wires, and the small pieces I think I have @ $80-85 into the replacement.
