Yanmar FX24D replaced with Massey GC2400
Yup, got tired of putting the battery charger on her every few weeks, and reading the advice here decided to look in to the replacement strategy. After googling the wiring for Delco alternators (most recommended using the three wire) 10 SI or 12 SI alternator. So went into town priced them at a local cut rate auto parts store $30. I left the store with it. Actually cost $45 with core charge.

Since the regulator that I have blown twice now cost over $80 bucks. I think this is a deal/steal.

OK, what did it take? Two bolts, and a bunch (7-8) of washers. Replace the 8M 60 Cent 1.25 thread bolt with a longer 80 Cent. Take the front of the alternator off and drill out the other mounting hole to 10 Mill. Don't worry it's easy. One nut to take the pulley/fan off. then turn it over and take out the four small bolts holding the cases together. DO NOT TAKE OUT THE ?STATOR? YA'KNOW THAT CENTER PIECE THAT SPINS. If you do, you learn how to replace the now loose brushes.

After drilling out the hole, look to see if you need to reindex the alternator (turn the case to better fit/match.) Put it back together. Mount it on the tractor. I left the charging light unconnected, for now.

You might need a slightly longer belt. With new belt, new charging wires, and the small pieces I think I have @ $80-85 into the replacement.

Interesting! And glad to hear it - and any followup you might have later.

I'll certainly keep this in mind if I blow a 3rd regulator. However, I'm a little concerned about clearances. On my YM2220D, the U-shaped hose from the waterpump to the block clears the alternator by only about 1/2 inch aft of the alternator. So, if the distance from the fanbelt to the rear surface of the replacement alternator is more than about 1/2" that of the stock Yanmar alternator, my conversion would be somewhat more involved than yours. Sounds like your's was pretty much a piece of cake. Congratulations!

Oh, BTW, don't know if it's even possible on your model, but have you ever, never, frequently, occasionaly, etc. shut off the master switch while the engine was running? Another thread mentioned a possibility that doing so could damage the charging circuit.

I can't shut mine off while running. It has a fuel solenoid. Shuts off the fuel to motor.

Is your new alternator internally regulated?

How about a picture of the installation?

The guy on E*ay has apparently doubled his buy it now price.

Yup! Internally regulated. use the three wire. It's the same as a one wire if you don't use the connector for connection 1. Connection 2 is pig tailed to the Alt Bat output to excite the windings. Very simple. Cost @ $30 -$35 everywhere for a rebuilt. If you have the room on your tractor a very elegant and simple replacement.

MickeyFX, if you lose the regulator just replace the Alternator as I did.

An after thought about the installation. I could have alternatively ground down the upper mount point to the correct length to match the slide bar bracket. But, the extended bolt and washers saved me grinding about an inch of aluminum. Not a hard job, but not necessary with this install. Didn't think of it while the front case was off, so decided to just jury rig.

Will see what I can do with phone camera.

thanks. Look forward to seeing what you've done.

Are you using washers as spacers to get the alternator pully aligned with the engine pully?

No, the pulleys matched up alright. i needed the washer/spacers to move the upper adjustable/slide bracket to align with the front of the hole on the alternator.
