The jack on my 2 horse bp is broke. The telescoping pipe falls out. Inside the outer pipe is a threaded rod with acme thread.

How do they work. Can they be fixed. I know they cost less than $50 but this is a shared trailer with two of my boarders. If I can fix it in an hour it would be worth it not to have to beg money from them. Plus it will take an hour to cut it off an weld a new one on.

lift the trailer and block it higher so will not fall .then look at the area where the crank is going into the top of jack. there is a cover or cap and under it should be 2 gears with roll pins to retain in place. some times the shaft will break at this point. or the pin has failed allowing the shaft to drop.

I have removed and used a grind stone to re-do and re drill the shaft. gears easy to locate in farm supply or places that sell the jacks.

using the same thinking have put the new part into the old welded part of jack. most all are same built. Saves time doing it this way./

The handle still turns the threaded rod. The inner tube with the foot has come loose and I can't figure out how to reattach it.

Either the nut has broken loose from the inner tube, the nut is stripped, or the tube has been extended too far. In the last case, you merely push the inner tube back while turning the crank to re-engage the nut & rod.

I know you asked about repairing your jack, my suggestion is if you decide it can't be repaired or not worth the effort. I replaced my slow cranking jack with one that has a pin in the leg that you can remove and the inner piece drops down and you put the pin back in another hole. You never have to crank it more than an inch or two. It comes with an optional swivel which l did not use since you can put the leg up inside. They are $50 at Harbor Freight and we had 20% or 25% coupon.

Hoss Puller you were right. The nut had come loose.

I took the handle off and the rod came out. It looks like it was a pressed or crimped fit. I cleaned it up well and welded the tube to the nut and filed down the high spot.

The first try it was in a bind and would not move. I took it out and straightened the rod. I drilled an oversize hole at the top so it could have some wobble room. I have about 6" of travel so with a block under the foot it will work.

There is no wonder these things give out. No way to grease it and the amount of dirt in the threads and outside tube. Plus all the weight rocking on that 3/4 dia rod. We only paid $400 for the trailer and the jack was one of the negotiating points.
