I got a call from a buddy wanting to know if there were any secrets to removing the dead starter from his 8n (crab distributer). I told him I would ask...I'm asking (haven't looked at his problem but he now has a good spark after we fixed his coil) Thanks

Fairly straight forward. Do be aware that the 2 long and skinny bolts that hold starter to housing also hold starter together!

He's talking about having to remove oil filters and other stuff in order to get clearance to withdraw the unit from the hole????

Yes, I had to remove my filter housing. Not a big deal.

Just make sure when he loosens the bolts he only takes them out enough to drop the starter not far enough that the started falls into several pieces.

I find it helpfull to remove the block drain cock, and if the brush band on the starter has the screw clamp toward the block, rotate it to the outside.

you can remove the bolts from the filter housing.. thouhg I've nver had to remov ethe filter housing itself..

angle the starter towards the block and down so that the end coming out would be roughly at the 2 oclock position if you are looking into the hole the starter is mounted in.. this setup has the bendix BEHIND the flywheel and ring gear and it engages from the backside and the bendix 'travels' towards the starter from it's static position out on the end of the shaft.

many people have egged the hole at the 2 oclock position to make it a tad easier to remove.

don't get carried away or you will pul the starter apart then be back asking how to hold the brushes captive to get the armature back in.. ( fishing line ).

also resist the temptation to power the starter once you remove it as it will engage the bendix towards the starter and be a BEAR to get back in..

Yes, do not play with the starter drive after removing starter. They "rewind" when the engine starts. And yes I had to remove the small brass pet cock in the block. It's helpful to run a couple nuts on the 2 starter bolts when starter is removed to keep it together. I would not be a fan of elongating starter hole to facilitate easy removal. Just take your time and it will come out without that much difficulty. Toothpicks also aid in holding brushes in position if starter comes apart but hopefully you (or your friend) wont have to go that route.

There is -no- problem elongating the hole... I've seen more with it, than without it.. you are not removing material near the 2 screw holes, and you are not agging it much anyway.. perhaps an additional 1/4" at the zenith of the arc that protrudes out of the original hole.

in the 9n, 2n, and 8n owners world.. that is a quite common modification..

As of yet, I've never seen a bellhousing ruined due to that mod..

I just pulled my starter last night. Didn't have to remove anything. The starter slipped out past block drain & all.
Had to 'reset' ratchet drive on a bench grinder with wire brush. This was fairly easy & took no time at all. re-installing starter today.
