Do you have the new seal for reference on how it fits? If it is simple press in lip seal I have carefully drilled two pilot holes 180 degrees apart and threaded in sheet metal screws and then used claw hammer or pry bars to pull the seal out.

hi roy, no i don"t have a new seal. i did call my local kubota dealer this morning to ask him about removal, but he did not call me back. probably likes that 100.00 per hour charge for labor. i actually thought of a similar way to do it, but not sure if i did remove it if i could press a new one back in. this tractor is a 2005 with 295 hours so it is pretty new looking and has not been abused so i'm pretty suprised this happened. bill

Removal is done by pushing a screwdriver past the lip of the seal and prying it out. This destroyes the seal, but is the easiest way to remove it. Most seals of this type, tap in. I usually find a socket that is about the same outside diameter and use this to tap it into place.

thanks ibnxe, as i was able to take off the oil seal. it was pretty easy after following your instructions. did check with my local kubota dealer about new seal and new collar only to find out that there are about 5 different size collars which have to micked to figure out what size i need, and also that there possibly is bearing damage and even possible pinion gear damage as you said in an previous post, so what looked like a fairley simple job may be too tricky as i really would not know how to line up the front end pinion gears with the shaft pinion gear as he said all that has to micked at both sides to make sure it lines up properly. thanks bill

The collars you mentioned are selective fit, to set the pinion preload. Even if you have to replace the bearings, the collar thickness will be the same. The bearings are machined to a very tight tolerance and the new ones will have the same thickness as the old ones. The only time you would have to select a new collar, would be if the pinion needed replacement.
Did you use the four wheel drive often? If not the pinion is most likely not damaged. The only way to know is to pull the pinion and inspect it. After removing the snap ring, the bearing and pinion should come out. It may be necessaary to use a puller, if the bearing is tight in the housing.

ibnxe, i pulled back the snap ring and reset it in and that really tightened up the whole shaft, so hopefully this will take care of this problem. thanks for all of your help in this fix. bill
