I have the old style axle on my JD 4400 before John Deere made the new axle. Mine is the " turf destroyer". I know John Deere changed out a bunch of these axles for people who used there tractors to mow with and that were damaging the turf in there yard. I wonder what John Deere done with all of the old axles ?? These old axles were made by Dana corporation.
Do you think John Deere took them back and destroyed them all ??

My Axle was replaced on my last tractor, JD4200. It really was a huge improvement. I was almost going to sell the machine because my turf was being destroyed too bad. Then they came out with the replacement, problem solved, never had an issue after that.

In this specific case, I am not sure how different the new design was, but if the fix was a minor change, it is likely they just re-worked the old parts to make the replacement new design axles on an exchange basis like any other company would do. There wouldn't be any of the old design left over in this scenario.

John Deere replaced the front axle on the 4400 I owned in 2000. They took it to the scrap yard beacuse JD did not want it.

The replacement axles were complete, and different design. The old axles laid around my Deere dealer until finally tossed in the metal bin. Deere didn't take them back, or at least didn't for a long spell. And Deere dealers don't get by keeping 'old junk' piles around, near as I can tell. But checking with a few dealers may find one not junked.

Mine was changed out, but didn't have a major problem with the first one. Besides, the first one turned shorter than the replacement, which probably is why the turf suffered less.
