The brakes on my 1900 are in need of replacement. I was out of adjustment. I took it apart tonight to see what I would need. The drums were in real good shape so all I need is a set of shoes. I had priced new shoes from NH and decided against that! They are on ebay for $215. Others had mentioned buying the lining from McMaster Carr. McMaster Carr has the lining in strips the proper width(1.75") that you buy by the foot. They also have the proper rivits so I am going to reline them my self. The lining was $17 the rivits were $9. for a hundred so I will end up with under $30 in my brake job. I will let you know how I make out. Should I use any type of adheasive along with the rivits?

Bill, Sounds great. :)

McMaster Carr is certainly a great resource. I have bought stuff for the guys at work from there with great success. Keep us posted with pics if possible. Do you have the bend and form liners? I wondered how pliable they are and additionally did you buy non-asbestos variety ?

Might want to check out your local semi truck garage. One company near me still reline shoes and they have the proper equipment to grind the shoes to the proper arch to fit the drum. On many shoes the upper and lower edges are a different thickness.

I know some of the local antique car guys take their vintage obsolete shoes there and it's reasonable .

I don't think there is much arch in the shoes .With the measurements I have taken, I figure the lining on the shoes is about 3/16" thick. I will let you know how flexible it is when it shows up. JC one thing you may want to check on your tractor is to remove the pin from the brake cam and see how hard it moves. My brake pedals moved easily, but when i took everything apart I found I couldn't move the brake cam by hand. After cleanin every thing up they move with 1 finger.

Bill,

Next time when I go to my place I'll check it. it operates pretty smoothly with foot pressure and don't feel any binding, but never took the pin off. Are you saying there might be dirt and grime on the pad and drum or it's mechanism if it does not move easily and freely?

JC where the cam passes through the cover mine was rusted and corroded. I got the first set of shoes done tonight! The Brake lining is verry pliable and you can cut it with a utility knife. I have been trying to upload pics but haven't been able to. I will try again later

Good deal Bill:) Did you use normal pop riveter to attach the lining? or beat the rivets with a round tip chisel? did you find out what material the liner was made out of. pm me if you need help with uploading the pic.

Glad you got one side done. Did you have to put a bushing /sleeve where it was rusted to keep the cam to operate without binding?

I got every thing back together and and the brakes work better than they have since I have owned the tractor. I can lock up either tire without putting a lot of pressure on the pedal. The brake lining I got was 3/16" nonmetalic brake lining. I got 4' but only used 3'. I wanted to have extra in case I screwed up. The part # is 6175k114 and was $4.43 per ft. The rivits are 3/16" diameter semi tubular brass 3/8" long. The # for them is 97451a672 and come 100 per pack for $9.34. I rivited and glued the lining to the shoes. I used super weatherstrip adheasive for the glue. 3/16th is the thickest lining you can use. The factory lining measures .196.

Bill,
I checked the SKU # with their website. Which one did you end up putting in, low, medium or high friction. Did you go non metallic or semi metallic?

Thanks,
JC,
