Guys & Gals,

My nighbor has a TSC PHD with a 12" and a 6" auger. The 6' is toasted from hitting rocks and roots. the 12" seems HUGE for my typical 6-7" half round posts I plan on using. AND the bit on the end is beat and dull and does not dig in very well.

Borrowing a PHD vs. renting/buying seems VERY good price wise. I ofered to "recondition" the auger if I borrowed it (seemed fair at the time) but now I am not certain. He said TSC has changed their augers and has a different type of tip now.

Maybe it is better to just buy a 9" auger?

Thanks in advance for the great advice I know is coming.
Be well,
David

I have a buddy that bores holes as a side business and he claims to have built the cutting edge up with welding rod and refinished it several times. I have no clue what rod or how he machines it down but, his stuff is in use almost daily and he has a never-ending list of buried things he has encountered while digging.

Bigbull338,

Is a 9" auger the correct size for my 6-7" half rounds? How about for the 6-7" round posts for the gate?

Thanks,
David

yes a 9in auger will be fine for those size posts.

If you only have a few holes and don't plan on owning it then buy the cheap bit from TSC (9" is fine for 6" posts). If you plan on owning the PHD or buying one at some point buy a good heavy duty one. Even TSC has (or use to) "heavy duty" augers you can buy and they are a lot better then the cheap crap that they call their standard duty.

I have an old Quality Farm and Fleet phd which is like the TSC ones. I bought it when all I was doing was building some small pastures in sand/clay soil. It did fine for that use. When I had to drill in shale I borrowed my neighbors older Massey Ferguson phd. When I bought his farm I got that phd with it and I have never used the Quality Farm and Fleet one since. Its there for a back up but I don't see myself ever needing it. The MF, like Dansuer, has a larger output shaft and uses much heavier duty augers. The MF I have has to be from the 70's, I'm thinking its 35-40 years old. Its never been apart or rebuilt. The augers are even original, the 12" had twisted slightly somewhere in its life but still works fine. The 6 and 9" are still drilling holes every year in the vineyard. The difference between the augers used on each phd is substantial as everything is thicker, you definitely want to use two hands to handle these MF augers where as one hand is all you need on the QF&F ones.
