Rebuilt 4630 wont start but smokes

I've compleatley rebuilt the 201 diesel engine in a friends 4630 tractor. with ample cranking speed, new fuel, and working injection pump. i cant get it to start, only blow diesel smoke out of the exhaust. everything is timed according to the manual. and will crank witha small shot of ether. any help would be appreciated. thanks

the rings probably or not seated yet and needs to run and work it for a while

yes sir, but the problem is that it wont run at all. I should have been clearer in my description. What i meant to say was, as i turn the engine over it blows plumes of unburnt fuel out of the exhaust, the only time this engine has fired, it was with the use of eather. but it only runs off that for a couple seconds. thanks

Assuming there are no assembly issues and the cam timing & valves are proper set I would say the injection timing is off. If there is compression & the injection timing is correct it has to run.
I would recheck the injection pump timing again.

what year model 4630 the later ones also had a timing inside to pump that if you didn't look the pump and removed to pump you must put the pump and a stand and flow time it

its a 94, never looked in the pump, i'll have to check it out

just for the heck of it.. did you comp test it?

No sir, I got it running last night but but it was missing on the #1 cyl, and smoked heavily, i ran out of daylight befor i could swap holes with the injector to see if the miss would move or stay with #1, But ill let you guys know what i find. Thanks for the help.
