Rebuilding a set of ring chains

Seems early to be getting chains ready for winter but time can get away on us all.
I want to rechaujk [recork] my tractor chains. I remember watching my father in law rebuild a set for his skidder. He took short pieces of hardened 3/8 round rod and welded them on.
My question is should I be using the stick welder with 7018 or can I use the mig?

A lot easier to mig it IMHO. ER70s wire will do fine.

Knowing that you have several hundred rings to do, why not buildup wire in a mig and then hardface?
