I recently purchased a used motor for my JD 165 and plan on rebuilding the original motor to use when the replacement motor eventually dies. I know the original motor has little compression, so I'm thinking valve wear or adjustment is needed, but either way, my neighbor and I are tearing this down completely. I do have the shop manual, but was wondering if there are internal replacement parts still available for this motor. If not, does anyone know of a business that sells aftermarket small engine parts for this motor? If anyone has any words of wisdom on my winter project, please feel free to comment. I love the JD 165 and just can't see putting her out to pasture yet.

Not sure about that specific motor, but Kawasaki is usually pretty good about parts. Worst case, a good machine shop (you will need their services anyway to do a real rebuild...) can do a lot with your parts, or build to available stock.

For example, you may have trouble finding a connecting rod, but a good shop can recut and round the big end of your existing one. Valves and valve guides can be adapted from other models if you can't find exactly what you want. Pistons and rings are usually available in at least one oversize for most motors from the manufacturer, but there are aftermarket (more expensive) suppliers that may have them if the oem doesn't.

Hope that helps...
