What's the verdict for using 1/2" rebar as an indeterminate (tall) tomato stake? I searched this but it's inconclusive.

We have used welded wire tomato cages forever but now want to expand and the big wire tomato cages are too bulky for winter storage. I figure to use 7' lengths of rebar. Why we need more than the 13 big cages is beyond me but the wife starts her own seeds so I go along for the ride.
We eat and give away all we can and then wife cooks and freezes (I think freezes) plenty for the dogs for winter. She often pours it over their dog food and they love it.

Half inch rebar in 7' lengths looks workable if I can find others in agreement or with experience. Anyone?

My wife read an article on the benefits of using rebar (long lasting, easy to use) in an old gardening magazine. If you do an Internet search you will find thousands of articles on building cages with rebar or just using them as stakes. I'm picking up some this weekend to give it a try.

One should still use nylon stockings to tie the plant to the bar or cage... Something about nylon & thunder storms converting air born nitrogen to useful nitrogen for the plant....

It has nothing to do with the nylon.

Been using the same 6-7 foot tee posts for past 20 years or so,,[just don't drive them in to deep].

Been using rebar for yrs. I buy a 20' stick & have them cut it into 3 pieces. I bought the plastic baling twine a few yrs back when Farm & Fleet went out of business. Works great for tying the plants. I use 3/8 rebar about 3' long for my two strands of electric fence I put around the garden.
