I'm looking to buy a rear PTO finish mower and would love any help on what to get and look for. It will go behind an L3010HST.

Sweet tractor has one called First Choice which is an excellent machine. I don't have one yet but will have soon. Rear discharge seems to be the popular choice.

I've used a Befco 60" RFM for about three years now. Other then sharpening the blades, lubricating and replacing the belt once, it's given me good service.
So, I can recomend a Befco...
You'll want a 72" mower behind that Kubota.

I second Roy's advice on width. Get the widest RFM you can run on the tractor...so you can cut close to things like a fence line easily.

Also the rear discharge is nice because you can cut close on either side...

Thanks for the advice. What do you have to say about solid vs air tires, and the mulching kit? I also see that they offer a anti-scalping option is that worth having?

Anti-scalping is a must have unless your property is perfectly level or you plan to fix the high spots. I have solid tires,no worries about flats.

After fixing more than a few flats on my finish mower I'm thinking about having them foamed. Or maybe I'll just throw some Slime in them and be done with it.

I have a LP RD mower (FDR1660). This mdl came w/ inflatable tires which LP fills w/ some type of puncture sealer. Not sure how solid tires are on the grass but the inflatable are very easy on it. I thought I might like an antiscalp roller but have since decided it wouldnt be worth the $50+ they want for it. I only have a couple places that scalp and I just lift the mower slightly to prevent scalping. My yard is anything but flat too. A wider mower would be really useful in wide open areas. However, if you have tight spots or abrupt terrain shifts a narrower mower might work better. Not sure about the mulching kit as my mower does a really good job of spreading the clippings.

I have a 1st Choice 72" rear discharge unit that I would recommend. I did get the antiscalp roller and it does have inflatable tires. Leaking or flat tires has been a problem, but they are easy on the yard. I put a tube in one of them that seem to have a valve stem problem...

I bought a Woods 72" rear discharge mower used three years ago and the only problems I've experience are ones for which I was responsible. I've hit a chuckhole and bent a spindle once. I've damaged a PTO clip hitting it with another implement while it was setting in the barn. I've bent a couple steel straps because I use a quick hitch and hadn't converted the straps to chain.

The bottom line on this is that if you take me and my errors out of the equation, the mower's been perfect. Further, I'm guessing it's survived a number of other mistakes without showing any effects so, all in all, I'd have to say it's a very good mower. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a 72" King Kutter and it came standard with air filled tires, and front anti-scalp roller.

Its been a solid preformer for me, and the only thing I've had go wrong was losing a ling pin off the top of one wheel spindle... I think it happened while backing the mower under the willow trees along the creek.

Of course I only noticed it when I lifted the mower... and so lost the cutting height spacer... luckily replacements were on hand at the local TSC.

Its been well worth the $1100I spent... and, yes, I'd buy another one.

Good luck

Zoomie I also own and have used the same deck for several years. I'm happy with mine however this year I have lost 3 spindle wheels the same as you. I finally got tired with replacing the wheel spacers so I used large cotter pins instead of the snap pins that were originally supplied with the deck. I haven't lost a wheel since I made the change.

Pine Ridge,

Good idea, I think I may do the same thing, since I've rarely adjusted the height of mine anyway.

Zoomie I'm the same way, I use one adjustment for spring and once the weather really warms up I then raise the deck another 1/2 inch to keep the grass from burning.
