I have 90,000 miles and still have not needed to replace the rear shoes. Did the front pads and rotors at 70,000 miles . We looked at the rear shoes then and they stilled showed plenty of life in them. How long have you gone on the original rear brakes?

I replaced mine on my '04 at around 60K just to change them...Figured they'd be somewhat glazed and old by then...Had plenty of pad left though.

Shoes? You have drum brakes on a 2006 pickup truck?

I don't know what the heck GM was thinking there besides lower cost but if the shoes are still good after 90k miles then they are most likely not adjusting properly and barely working.

well, if he's done 70k on the front and 90k total and hasn't run over too many people, then they must be working ok. i agree that they should be pads, and not shoes. i'm going to guess that it's an hd? i haven't had anything smaller than a 3/4 ton since the late 90's, but i haven't heard of anything small (6 lug wheels) going that long on brakes. if it is an hd, i think you're in the range for normal operation.

it also kind of depends on how you put your miles on. i have an 06 2500hd and i've got mid 50's on it now, and all my brakes are showing plenty of life left. i'm going to guess 80k range when i need them, unless the rotors start to pulsate too much before that. i do a lot of short trips on local roads. if you do a lot of start and stop, you probably won't get as much life as if you do more long trips too.

the hd's aren't all that much different from the smaller trucks, but with the heavier brakes you'd assume they should last longer. also, if you haul a 2 axle trailer, your trailer brakes are taking a lot of the load off.

edit: now that i think of it, a friend bought an 06 1/2 ton wt, and i almost think it did have rear drums still. historically, all the older trucks i have had went forever on the rear shoes, as compared to the front pads & rotors, so probably not too far off. my 01 3500 and 06 2500 both have rear disc, so i tend to forget about drums. least i think they still had them on some models then?

I replaced my front pads on my 2007 Z-71 at 70,000 miles. I also bought shoes for the rear drum brakes. Even though the rear was showing very little wear I replaced them anyway. Chevrolet Z-71's have drums on the back. Too many problems with with off road gunk getting in to the rear disc brakes so Chevy went back to rear drums on the Z-71.

I have an 03 2500HD Front brakes still fine; did the rears @ about 70K . This seems to be the norm; very good front binders on these trucks

i have 157000 on a 2008 chevy 2500 with the orginal brakes on

but 99% of the miles is highway and interstate i rarely do any in town driving

I have a 2005 gmc 2500 duramax 4X4. I just turned 126,000 miles and the brakes are all original and still within spec. I think this is the most awesome set of brakes on a truck I have ever had. My '99 truck of same size had to have the front brakes done every 20K miles. Never did the rear drums on that one.

I have an '03 Chevy 2500 HD with a Duramax diesel that has 142,000 miles on it and still has the original brakes. I live in the country and most of my driving is 30 to 100 miles on empty two-lane paved roads. I often make these trips without touching my brakes except as I leave my driveway and, again, when I get to my destination.

I have a '99 1500 ECSB 4x4 with the 4 wheel disc. I had a squeak in the rear so I changed the rear pads w/ plenty of life left in them at about 75k. Didn't fix the squeak - that was universal joints. Finally changed the front pads & rotors at 101k. They were pretty much toast at that point. Truck now has 115k on it.
