I am going to buy a new bush hog 3008, having the dealer put a chain guard on the front. The cutter has metal band on the back, my question is how long is that band going to last, should I go ahead and buy the rear chains also or wait until I tear that metal guard off and then put chains on the back??

I bought a Woods mower last year WITHOUT the chains. It had a simular metal guard. I made my own chain guard. I used the mower ONE TIME before I started on the chains. End result.....The metal guard was bent, and just about torn off the mower in 2 hours use. You might have better luck. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Chain guards are cool. They were not standard on my Bush Hog Squealer. Standard was a flexible composite fiber flap in front, and the metal band you describe in back.

After 4 years of light-to-medium duty use, both the flap and band are in pretty good shape. The flap is permanently bent back a bit, and there are a few dents in the band (and the deck) from intercepting flying rocks launched by the blades. All in all, they are in pretty good shape and I'm not sure chains would do any better job, but chains are cool!
