Rear Axle Seal YM1500, etc.

1. I need to replace the rear axle seal in my YM1500. I have a book, but it's not very clear. Do I have to take out the entire axle by removing the bolt inside or can I just work from the outside end of the axle?

2. I did notice through the little hole under the PTO housing that that bolt holding the axle is loose. So I have to tighten that anyway, even if I don't need to remove it to replace the seal. But is the only way to access that bolt through the top of the transmission under the seat? I hate to take all of that off if I don't have to.

3. When I took off the PTO housing I think I heard something small fall, but I can't find anything on the floor. Could I have lost a small washer or something?

You can replace the outer axle seal without removing the axle. Just remove the hub (often very stuck) & then remove the 4 bolt flange. BUT the outer seal is really only to keep dirt, etc OUT of the brake housing. If you have oil leaking from there then the inner seal has failed & that requires more work. Do you know if your tractor is the red or green style?

It's the Red style and it is leaking oil from the rear axle. I have seal parts 58 and 31 from you. Do I need something else? Actually, now that I look at it, I have the six bolt wheel and the flange and the axle are one piece. So I went ahead and pulled off the top of the transmission and pulled the entire axle. I'm definitely going to need to order new parts.

All YM1500s have a removable hub on the rear. What is your engine model number? You might not have a YM1500.
