I recently bought a 444 International for snow removal. I have been doing some minor repairs on it and the right rear wheel seal is leaking. I removed the wheel and tire and took the 4 bolts out that bolt the axle to the housing but I cannot get the axle to pull out. Is there something else that is holding it in place or is it just going to be a pain in the butt?

Probably clips on the planetary end of the axle. A shop manual is an invaluable tool in these instances.

I was hoping that was not the case, and yes, a shop manual would be nice right now but I do not have one.

I always suggest to anyone doing repairs, if you don't have a manual, at least use the manufacturers online parts diagrams. They can be a big help in showing what parts are involved, order of how things come apart and how they reassemble. I really like Messicks and recommend their site often. Looking at the 444 axle diagram on Messicks parts website, yes, there is a snap ring on the end of the axle. Gotta tell you...this is the time to get a manual. It looks like if you register at Classic Machinery Network they have a free PDF manual available to members. The Classic Machinery Network - Downloads

I ordered the manuals for my IH624 from messick...they were very good to deal with and the only place I could find manuals for that particular machine. I agree as well about the parts diagrams. With some mechanical knowledge, they are extremely useful for disassembly/reassembly. The only thing they really lack is clearances/tolerances

Just looked at the Case International parts website and there is a snap ring 357194R1 holding the axle in. It looks like you will need to replace the 388472R1 gasket and the 383394R91 seal to stop the leaking.
