I didn't say there was no possible way to get hurt. I would have put the stabilizers down. We all take bigger risk everyday. What do you think the chance is that there would be catastrophic failure while they were under it. Probably less than the 3rd world country building collapsing while they were in it.

That is the only case I have ever seen. I have seen far more fatalities from using a backhoe for its intended purpose.

I think so.
Twice the weight on long end as well as twice the distance.
In fact the ladder might be the only 'weak link'.

In fact I once did similar in order to repair a brick chimney using bricks and 2" x 10" as I did not have scaffolding.

Besides, do the stabilizer cylinders have some sort of protection such that if a hose breaks; the cylinder still holds (must be powered down for example). If a stabilizer hose broke while you were on the edge of a hole it would look like the pic above. Doesn't seem likely to me that this would be overlooked on a modern machine as in the OP pic.

I was thinking how often you rely on them to keep from falling into the hole.

I saw a 2 inch hydraulic hose give way on a machine once. No warning, it just popped, it sent a jet of hydraulic fluid over 20 feet in seconds. Nobody hurt, but it scared the crap outta a few folks.

Yep hoses do break. Seems like its about a million times more likely to pop while under use, than while sitting. Has anyone seen a hose pop while engine off?

Anyway back to the point that those people under that hoe are probably in no more danger than those who ride in automobiles. Its just different mannerisms. I still wouldnt do it, and those people would be disscussing my superstitions in an unfamiliar language (thats a 3rd world style forum! ), and they'd be mostly correct too. Only thing for sure is they are in the shade and I'm out in the sun risking sunstroke etc.

when my buddy went to peru for a few months, he watched some people doing roofing, they would lay a ( something like a 2x4 ( or dimensional 2x4 ) made of mohagany ) they would lay one down and walk across it from edge to edge , etc. no osha..
