Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the standard ignition key/switch with a different one? I had someone break into my barn and of everything there, they only took the key from my tractor. I'd worried their intent is to come back and take it, so I'd like to re-key it. Unfortunately all the B series tractors use the same silly key.

Any ideas? Think I could use a grand L switch and key?

i don't really think a key switch would stop a dedicated thief. but if it makes u feel a better i am sure u can get a switch that will be dedicated to your tractor

How about another kill switch hidden somewhere? Wouldn't take much....and if you placed it right, it wouldn't slow you down much. I've thought about doing this myself, even thought I haven't had a problem yet

My favorite method of preventing theft of my old car is by placing 2 16 penny nails pointed directly at the tread of the tire. One in front and one in the rear. The thief can always hot wire a vehicle, but it is next to impossible to drive it with a flat tire. Granted, you have to remember to remove the nails before you move the vehicle, but I'll bet that if you forget it will only be for one time. The other thing that I thought of was buying a Denver boot, but the cost was prohibitive. I live in a very rural area and the neighbors even though they aren't very close, do keep an eye out for problems. the Junkman

My dealer told me that there are four different key patterns for the B series. Not much protection there...

You can change your key out to pretty much any key switch that will handle the requirements for the diesel glow plugs. (You couldn't use the switch from my '63 Chevy truck, for example, because it doesn't have a setting for warming the glows.)

But a tractor is pretty easy to hot wire and so if you're worried about theft you should do things that other folks have suggested (cutout switches - valves, too). Physically securing it would also be a good idea (use a Kryptonite lock or something). And make sure you're insured, if worse comes to worse /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif...

I leave the key in mine most of the time - figure that if someone wants to steal it I probably can't stop 'em. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

There are better ways of dealing with intruders (and thieves /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif). Dogs, alarms and assistance from the NRA come to mind..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good Luck Peter......

Depending on what got taken they may have been kids. I had someone get into my truck a few years ago. They took change, radio, some tools and my keys. A few months later two teens came to the door with my keys a diffrent radio and some tools and said they were sorry and as part of punishment they had to return everything. These kids were about 15 years old. I might be nicer than most but wrote it off as them being stupid teenagers. I have one of them come to the house and do some projects that I don't feel like doing. I get my fence painted and the kid gets a few bucks. I never had anything else come up missing since.

If someone wants the Tractor and knows what he is doing then it's gone.

Things you can do to slow the common crook is do things like remove the fuses. A pain for you.

If there is a lockout that says the thing can't start if the PTO is engaged then engage it. If you can add another switch in the circuit under the hood or under the seat then try that.

I was going to say do a fuel lockout but that may cause you more problems.

I have a 20 HP Simplicity garden tractor that my grandson figured out how to start so I started leaving the PTO lever engaged. He has never figured that out. Of course he is approaching the age where I don't worry about it anymore.

But then there was that time he just showed up and managed to take the hose reel off the back of the house with the golf cart. He is a blessed child.

He might just grow to be a tractor thief.
